Dharma. By what does one know existence and non-existence? The one who cognizes, is that existent or non-existent? By what third dissimilar dharma of those two does one know existence and non-existence? For the moment, it is not existent, Because apart from the own-characteristic and the universal-characteristic, Existence also is not. Thus, it is refuted. It is not non-existent, If existence is not, Of what will non-existence be? Thus, it is said. There is also no dissimilar dharma that is neither of those two. Therefore, there is no cognizer of existence and non-existence. Second, the conclusion of negation is: Therefore, space is not existent, It is not non-existent, it is not an own-characteristic, It is not a universal-characteristic, thus it is said. Second, comparing that principle to others is: The five elements, Whatever others are also like space. Earth, water, fire, wind, and consciousness, the five elements, whatever others are also to be known as similar to the analysis of space. Thus, the universal-characteristic of earth in the past, Earth is not even slightly existent. From "Thus" to "Therefore, earth is not existent," etc., should be stated. Second, showing that one is not liberated by clinging to extremes is: Those of small intellect, To things, As existence and non-existence, That seer, Does not see peace, quiescence. Naturally small in intellect and weak, clinging to the extremes of existence and non-existence, and those of self and other schools who have fallen away from seeing the path of nirvana, the nature of emptiness, whoever regards internal and external things as existent or non-existent, that one, with nirvana as the object to be seen, is peaceful because it is free from all conceptualization, and is quiescent because the knowable and the knower are reversed, does not see the nature of ultimate emptiness. Thus, it is also said in the sutra: Existence and non-existence are both extremes, Purity and impurity are also extremes. Therefore, having completely abandoned both extremes, The wise do not even abide in the middle. Thus it is said. In the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way, the Examination of the Elements, which is the commentary on the fifth chapter. Explanation of the fifth chapter.
