The Instruction on Transforming Happiness and Suffering into the Path The Instruction on Transforming Happiness and Suffering into the Path The Instruction on Transforming Happiness and Suffering into the Path. Homage to the noble Avalokiteshvara! Homage to Khro Phu Lotsawa! It is said that the Kashmiri Pandit, known as Shakya Shri Bhadra, the great Kashmiri Pandit, was renowned as the third Buddha to come. He was prophesied, "Go to Tibet, and great benefit will arise." Therefore, he decided to go to Tibet. When he went to the eastern part of India, Chöje Khrobu Lotsawa heard of this and went to invite him, as far as Droma's Depth, a place called Vidur Chhingpo Gathering. The Pandit, along with nine minor pandits and many other sick people, were carried on litters over roads and valleys. When they were being invited, the Pandit asked, "Lotsawa and his retinue, are you happy?" They replied, "We are happy." The Kashmiri Pandit said, "Whatever happiness or suffering arises, it must be transformed into the path." This is an appearance. When happy, dedicate the bliss as accumulation, May benefit and happiness fill the sky! When suffering, take on the suffering of all, May the ocean of suffering dry up! Here, transforming happiness into the path and transforming suffering into the path, among these two, first, there are two ways of transforming happiness into the path: through the door of conventional bodhichitta and through the door of ultimate bodhichitta. The first is: when there is no sickness in the body, no suffering in the mind, and all favorable conditions are complete, and when the thought arises, "I am happy now," transforming it into the path is: I am happy and pleased with that happiness and bliss, and just as I desire happiness and bliss, there is no sentient being who does not desire happiness and bliss. All sentient beings are only kind ones who have been my parents since beginningless time, and they have taken turns being parents, raising me with kindness just like my present parents. Therefore, just as I am happy and blissful, may all mother sentient beings also attain happiness and bliss, think this from the depths of your heart, and also speak it with your mouth. Three Jewels, please listen! Please bless that all sentient beings, like myself, may be endowed with happiness and bliss! To the Three Jewels

Please grant your blessings. The happiness and well-being we experience now arise from the power of accumulating merit in the past. If we desire such happiness and well-being in the future, we should recognize that it is a sign to engage in virtue, and strive to act virtuously with our body, speech, and mind. Secondly, there are three ways to transform happiness into the path through the mind of ultimate bodhicitta. The first is to recognize happiness as the Dharmakaya: Right now, I feel happy. Is the happiness in the body or in the mind? There is no other source of happiness besides these two. Without the mind, the body is like a corpse in a cemetery, devoid of any joy or happiness. If we analyze this mind, past thoughts have ceased and are gone. Future thoughts have not yet arisen and do not exist. If we examine the present thought, it does not arise from anywhere in the beginning. When it ceases, it does not cease into anywhere. Even when it remains in the middle, it does not abide anywhere from the crown of the head to the soles of the feet. It has no inherent nature such as color or shape. Having examined it in this way, the very nature of the mind, which is not established as anything, is what is called the unborn Dharmakaya. Relax in that state and keep the mind in equanimity. The second is to recognize happiness as the Sambhogakaya: Arising from that meditative state, contemplate the mind that appears as happiness as a single white HRIH (藏文,梵文天城体:ह्रीः,梵文罗马拟音:hrīḥ,汉语字面意思:Great Compassion) with a tsek-drak (seed syllable with a diacritic mark). From it, rays of light emanate, purifying the sins and obscurations of sentient beings. Having been completely integrated, on a lotus and moon seat, visualize oneself as the Bhagavan Great Compassionate One, with one face and four arms. The first two hands are joined in prayer at the heart. The lower right hand holds a crystal rosary. The lower left hand holds a white lotus flower. Adorned with precious jewels and wearing a skirt of various silks on the lower body. In his heart, on a moon mandala, light radiates from the white HRIH (藏文,梵文天城体:ह्रीः,梵文罗马拟音:hrīḥ,汉语字面意思:Great Compassion). When the light touches the outer world, it transforms into a celestial palace. When it touches the inner sentient beings, they transform into the Great Compassionate One, just like oneself. Again, light radiates, inviting all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions in the form of light, appearing as the Great Compassionate One, just like oneself.
