Offered adornments. Went to the charnel ground, was devoured by wild animals. After a night, the king came with his retinue. The heart was unhappy, the daughter had a bad dream. Asked where Mandhe Sangmo had gone. Searched in all directions. Went to the charnel ground, everywhere was splattered with blood, fragments of cloth and hair scattered about. (110a) Saw the bones of the feet, skull, and urn. Thought, who was sent to this charnel ground, who died? Said, even if Mandhe Sangmo died, it would be alright. Weeping in sorrow, asked the king. The king said your daughter was devoured by wild animals. Upon hearing this, immediately fainted. The teacher poured water, and after waking up, the king recounted Mandhe Sangmo's lineage. After that, the king and his retinue entered the Dharma. In that place, the Great Vehicle of Buddhism flourished. After that, thinking of going to India, there was a city called Flower Blossoming, the king was called Ashoka, who wielded demonic power. He made the Dharma decline, and all the Sangha were in turmoil. The Sravaka school split into two factions. Many young people split off, becoming the Mahasanghika. A few old people split off, becoming the Sthavira. More than two hundred years had passed. That king destroyed those with the sound of drums, destroyed the cities with wooden fences. Ashoka was staying in a house. Padmasambhava saw the king as an object to be tamed. He manifested as a monk and went to the king's palace to beg for alms. He said: Seize this one who despises me. Poured sesame oil into a large copper pot, and burned very strong firewood underneath. The monk took off his robes (110b) and put them in the copper pot. When he looked inside the next day, a lotus had grown in the copper pot. It was a cubit high, and in the middle of the lotus's stamen, the monk was sitting unharmed. King Ashoka felt intense remorse. He had done something inappropriate to such an object of offering. I have accumulated many uninterrupted sins. He asked, how can I purify these sins? He asked the leader of the monastic community. The manifested monk was taken away by the king. The leader of the monastic community said: In Jambudvipa, in a hundred thousand places, build a hundred thousand stupas in one night, and give food and wealth to the unprotected, and the sins will be purified. Upon hearing these words, the king thought: Giving food to the unprotected is easy.

One night, even a hundred thousand stupas cannot accomplish one (merit), because it is said that sins cannot be purified. Then, the great Bhikshu Wangpo's army said: You are the king prophesied by the Buddha, go to the Bodhi tree and make a prayer. King Ashoka went to the Bodhi tree, (thinking) if I am the king prophesied by the Buddha, then in one night, may the gods and demons build a hundred thousand stupas in a hundred thousand places of the world. As soon as he spoke, a hundred thousand stupas were built. All the poor were provided with food, wealth, and clothing. He cultivated the teachings in Vaisali.
