I prostrate to the Three Roots! For the yogis who practice the Dharma of the Three Roots' Secret Essence, these signs of warmth that appear as evidence should be kept in mind as follows. May they meet with those who have karmic connections! Firstly, the signs of distinguishing between the body's samsara and nirvana are: being free from attachment to the body, having no hunger or thirst, not being afraid even when surrounded by hundreds of executioners, the exhaustion of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, the reversal of attachment and desire, and the feeling that one's own body does not exist. These are the signs of distinguishing between the body's samsara and nirvana. Until these signs appear, one should diligently engage in practice. Secondly, the signs of distinguishing between speech's samsara and nirvana are: having no attachment to hearing sounds and words, the cessation of illusory appearances, whatever is spoken being only the words of secret mantra Dharma, hearing the voices of the Three Roots and receiving prophecies. Until these occur, one should strive to distinguish between speech's samsara and nirvana. Thirdly, the signs of distinguishing between mind's samsara and nirvana are: the cessation of external perceptions of the mind, aversion to samsaric phenomena, not perceiving the movement of breath, having no acceptance or rejection, and no anger towards good or bad circumstances of others, all illusory appearances becoming blurred and indistinct, and the experience and realization beyond the intellect blazing without direction like a flickering flame. Until these signs appear, one should exert effort and practice properly. Furthermore, during the Vajra movements of the body, the phenomena of the body trembling and feeling like it is cracking and bursting do not occur, and one remains stable and firm. During the recitation of the syllable Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽) , one feels that all appearances are filled with the resounding sound of Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:吽). The three doors of body, speech, and mind become equally scattered, aimless, and undirected. These are the common external signs of distinguishing between samsara and nirvana through the three doors, which are of a changing nature, and their meaning is not truly grasped. Secondly, the true inner signs are: after the guru has determined the essential point of the nature of reality, practicing with the three postures and three ways of looking" } ] ============================================================

Having practiced in this way, for the superior faculty, half a month; for the intermediate, three months; and for the inferior, ten months, the lamp of the empty bindu appears effortlessly. When it appears sometimes and does not appear at other times, that is the measure of liberation from death. Likewise, having practiced in this way, according to the distinction of the faculties, in seven months, nine months, or at the latest eleven months, the lamp of the completely pure expanse ripens on its own, appearing without boundaries. At that time, having practiced relying on the two rays, first a white light appears brilliantly, and then five lights appear in fragments. For the superior, after three weeks; for the intermediate, five; and for the inferior, after seven, the appearance of the five lights stands upright, like the feathers of an arrow, like the tip of a spear, and like a rainbow. Then, for the superior, after nine weeks; for the intermediate, half a month; and for the inferior, after one month, the colors of the expanse appear in various ways. Then, for the superior, after nine months; for the intermediate, twelve; and for the inferior, after eighteen months, the appearance of the expanse appears like a mustard seed. As soon as it is seen, it appears as a brilliant white light. That is the sign of mastering the nature of reality. Then, for the superior, after eighteen weeks; for the intermediate, twenty-one; and for the inferior, after one month, the expanse of awareness appears without day or night. This is called the complete increase of the expanse, and it is the sign of the exhaustion of samsara. Then, for the superior, after three months; for the intermediate, six; and for the inferior, after twelve months, the bindu increases to the size of a mustard seed and a bean. At that time, the bindu appears to move back and forth. That is the sign of the appearance being condensed into essence. At that time, the body is free from activity, and compassion arises forcefully in the mind. Speech becomes like that of a mute. Then, for the superior, after seven months; for the intermediate, ten; and for the inferior, after seventeen months, all the bindus become like mirrors. Light pervades the space in front of oneself, and rays appear like the feathers of an arrow. At that time, it is the sign of seizing awareness. The body also becomes youthful, and the worms in it are exhausted. One does not engage in either virtuous or non-virtuous actions. Having abandoned effort and accomplishment, and realizing the meaning of no birth and no death, is the sign of seizing the seed of liberation. Then, for the superior, after three months; for the intermediate, five; and for the inferior, after nine months, the bindu becomes the size of a peach pit. The light appears to stop remaining in its own place. The suffering of food and drink subsides, and the body becomes youthful. At that time, it is the sign of mastering appearance. Because the wind of wisdom is seized, the experience of going in space arises, and one meets with sentient beings.
