Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter on Actions Endowed with Skillful Means Chapter Sixteen: The Chapter on Actions Endowed with Skillful Means The intermediate summary is: Increasing faith and seeking the Dharma, Explaining and likewise practicing, And truly, the instructions are shown accordingly. Thus, the fifth meaning of attainment is to show the nature of the aspects conducive to enlightenment. First, generate great faith and seek the words of the profound and vast scriptures and the meaning they explain. After obtaining the Dharma, explain it to others, practice the meaning of the Dharma, and obtain the cause that makes practice excellent—instructions and subsequent teachings—in this way of entering the ground of the noble ones. These five chapters are the common outline of the chapters on the aspects conducive to enlightenment, endowed with skillful means, reaching the other shore, immeasurable offerings, and the aspects of enlightenment. Therefore, the intermediate summary is summarized here in one place. Second, the actual nature of the aspects conducive to enlightenment exists. What is it that is grasped by? It is the chapter on skillful means. What is grasped by those skillful means are the chapters on reaching the other shore and gathering. The chapter on immeasurable offerings. The three chapters on the aspects conducive to enlightenment. And the chapter on the qualities that depend on them. The chapter on conduct and the stages of the grounds and the ultimate, which are established separately, there are six chapters in total. Among them, the first chapter on skillful means has two parts: the actions to be grasped by skillful means, and the explanation of the three kinds of skillful means that grasp. Just as forests and sentient beings, mountains and rivers rely on the great earth at all times and in all ways, the stable external mountains, forests, rivers, etc., and all the moving internal sentient beings rely on the earth. Similarly, the three kinds of actions of body, speech, and mind of wise Bodhisattvas, at all times, giving and so on, and the thirty-seven aspects of enlightenment, etc., in short, all virtuous dharmas, there is nothing that does not rely on the actions of the three doors. Therefore, the basis of all virtuous dharmas is the actions of the three doors, so it is said. Second, not being completely discouraged, abandoning the attention to inferior paths, not discriminating.

The three wisdoms of what, Explained by each verse: Extremely difficult deeds, giving away body and possessions, accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, and enduring wrongdoings, etc., the nature of deeds is immeasurable and diverse. Moreover, these must be completed over many eons, that is, they must be cultivated in three countless eons, therefore, those who are of the nature of wearing the great armor of diligent effort for a long time, the sons of the Victorious Ones, the Bodhisattvas, will not become disillusioned with this cycle of existence through the actions of body, speech, and mind. Due to the power of lineage and the habituation to virtuous dharmas, not only will they never be discouraged or weary, but like a fire fueled by wood, the three doors will naturally enter into the accumulation of merit and wisdom, and they will never be satisfied. This explains how to rise from weariness. Just as those beings who wish to benefit themselves avoid inexhaustible poison and weapons, and the falling of iron thunderbolts from the sky, and protect their bodies from the armies of enemies, so that they avoid encountering them, so too, the sons of the Victorious Ones, from the two Hinayana vehicles of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, with the nature of the three actions of body, speech, and mind, turn away from the Hinayana, that is, none of the actions of the three doors are engaged for the sake of the fruits of the Hinayana. Why? Because the Hinayana strongly clings to self-interest, thereby abandoning compassion for sentient beings, and because the wisdom that realizes the two selflessnesses of the reality of knowable objects is not complete, the Hinayana path contradicts the great path of Bodhi, therefore entering into it is a precipice for the Mahayana practitioner. Bodhisattvas, because they constantly know the reality of knowable objects through the wisdom that realizes the two selflessnesses, therefore do not discriminate against any dharma, just as the active virtuous doer, and his actions of giving, etc., are also not discriminated, and with regard to the actions of deeds, diligently engaging in the deeds of giving, etc., and the three aspects, they do not regard them as the characteristics of this and that, because they naturally become accustomed to the wisdom of non-objectification in the three spheres. If one possesses such non-discriminating wisdom, then weariness will never arise from the suffering and wrongdoings of sentient beings, and the long duration of time, etc., and after realizing equality, existence and peace
