A Concise Commentary on the Recitation Manual of Lama Sangdu. Written by Rigdzin Gyurme Dorje. A Concise Commentary on the Recitation Manual of Lama Sangdu is presented. By Rigdzin Gyurme Dorje. Homage to the Guru, Padma Kara). Herein is a record of how to perform the recitation of Lama Sangdu. Firstly, the arrangement of the supports and offerings is as follows: Offer a torma to the local deities. On the mandala's platform, sprinkle with the five elixirs. It should be complete with the ritual of colored threads. The center is blue, the four petals are the colors of the four directions, the eight precious corners are blue, and the sixteen lotus petals are adorned with beautiful colors, surrounded by a charnel ground stone fence with flames. If one has the means, one can draw a complete gate with colored powders or display a painted cloth. If one is very concise, it is also acceptable to arrange a collection of deities according to their number. In the center of that, fill a vase with dharma medicine and the base of the three sweets, adding various medicines, filling about two-thirds with red pills rolled from barley flour. Tie a red silk neck cord, adorn the opening with peacock feathers, and attach a protection cord. On top of that, place a skull cup on a stand, filled with either a single skull or grains, and in the center, place a consecrated image. In front of the vase, arrange a torma of blazing jewels in a skull cup, or if unavailable, arrange a round torma surrounded by four lotus petals. Also, arrange the protector's torma, medicine alcohol, and other offerings in a well-arranged manner. Opposite to that, gather one's own seat, vajra, bell, and other necessary items. If one has the means, one should also prepare a protective wheel and upper and lower wheels. However, for the recitation practice of a mendicant, it is sufficient to be content with just this much. Begin the practice from the evening session. Pile stones at the door, bless and dedicate the obstacle-removing torma. Visualize oneself as Hayagriva, and from one's body emanate clouds of wrathful deities similar to oneself, dispelling obstacles. Thus, the assembly of wrathful deities that dispel obstacles binds and protects all directions. Then, generate the front support as in the action manual. Perform the preliminary practices of refuge and bodhicitta, confession, and offering of mandalas, etc., and recite the guru's supplication, receiving the four empowerments. Dissolve the assembly field into oneself and maintain the meaning of the empowerments. Then, the main practice is as follows: Oneself and the front support are inseparable. In the center of the mandala, visualize Hayagriva, and on the four lotus petals are the four families, father and mother. On the head of Hayagriva

Visualize the Lama Vajrasattva in union with his consort. In front of them and in the four directions, visualize the five skull-cup lineages. Beyond that, in the space above the eight-sided precious structure, visualize the eight auspicious symbols. Around that, through mere faith and devotion, visualize a gathering of root and lineage lamas, and on the sixteen lotus petals, visualize the yidam deities, vidyadharas, dakinis, and dharma protectors, like a dense cloud. Although all of this appears dualistic, determine that your own mind is the nature of Lama Vajrasattva, merely a manifestation of pure potential. Cherish the practice of meditating on this non-dualistically, completely, like a reflection in a mirror, clear and empty, free from attachment. Then, invite the wisdom beings, request them to remain, and perform prostrations and offerings. With "Manifest existence, the celestial palace, Lama deity," and so on, hold the mind without grasping, seeing all of manifest existence, the outer and inner worlds, as a mandala of support and supported, appearing like a rainbow in water and moon, clear yet without inherent existence. Apply the visualization of light radiating and gathering from the Om, etc., at the crown of the head of the Lama Vajrasattva at the crown of your head, receiving the four empowerments. Divide the mantra to be recited, (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning), into four sessions, with a time limit of three months. The count should be one crore, i.e., ten million, according to the method of counting after reciting a million. The sign of accomplishment is to meet the face of the great teacher Padmasambhava in reality, experience, or dream. If any of these three recitations have been completed beforehand, and you wish to perform the recitation of the activity ritual, then recite the continuation of the meditation on the five skull-cup lineages, or especially learn the key points of the oral transmission seven-day method and its practice. In any case, when setting the recitation sessions, as in the ritual sequence, the fourth session of the root should be placed in meditative equipoise, and the sixth session, obtaining accomplishment, should be done near the end of the recitation. Here, only as a placeholder, starting from the string of the vase previously arranged, recite about twenty-one secret mantras. If performing a tsok offering, then as stated in the activity ritual during the offering, but during the recitation, follow the practice done here. As usual, offer with tormas, medicine, and rakta, and at the end of the praises and requests, perform the dharma protector's torma ritual, and enjoy the tsok.
