Instructions for a Beloved Disciple on Departure: The Eye-Needle of Discernment. By Gyurme Jampel Chokyi Drakpa. Instructions for a Beloved Disciple on Departure: The Eye-Needle of Discernment. By Gyurme Jampel Chokyi Drakpa. Instructions for a Beloved Disciple on Departure: The Eye-Needle of Discernment. By Gyurme Jampel Chokyi Drakpa. With the myriad rays of your wisdom and compassion, dispel the darkness in his mind, and bestow upon him the glory of a wish-fulfilling jewel. May the supreme lama protect me until enlightenment! 1. Whenever you urge me to speak words that benefit you. However, do I possess dual qualities? Upon examination, my courage to speak diminishes. 2. However, the guide, the lion among humans, said, "Do not rely on the person, but rely on the Dharma." And, the compassionate one in the Uttaratantra Shastra teaches the path to liberation, which should be taken to heart like the words of a sage. 3. Therefore, for its meaning, examine it well for anyone, and speak words of discernment. Now, I raise the golden needle of truthful speech, so listen with mindful eyes. 4. On the vast expanse of the earth, adorned with trees that break through the ground with dual norms, prominent in the glory of Dharma and politics, are they not revered as the crown jewels of Brahma and Indra? 5. Nourished by the power of the ten virtuous laws, nourished by upright speech in a faultless lotus garden, pleasing the minds of all bipeds with upright conduct. 6. In the vast footsteps of the Buddhas of the three times, with the heat of discipline, study, reflection, and meditation, may you always shine as the source of light for the banner of the teaching of explanation and practice. 7. Discipline is the basis of all qualities, namely, individual liberation, the mind of enlightenment, and the common and uncommon protective boundaries and vows of inner and outer secret mantras, protect them like your own eyes. 8. Even if you do not protect the extremely subtle aspects, but cherish the gross aspects, it will become a cause for falling into the lower realms, like the leaves of the castor tree. Therefore, cherish both the subtle and the gross. 9. Having been discouraged by non-Dharmic actions in the past, do not be complacent with laziness and engage in non-virtue. From this day forward, strive single-mindedly in the Dharma.

Oṃ! May wishes be fulfilled like joy and happiness. 11. Diligently listen to the principles of the aggregates, elements, sense bases, dependent origination, faculties, places and non-places, vehicles, conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, and the nature of time. (As noted in the 'Entering the Wise') Strive to hear about the nature of the two truths and four truths. 12. Thus, the stream of the enlightened masters' intentions, although there are countless manifestations of various types of reasoning, if one does not rely on the vast ocean of the profound and extensive early translation teachings, one is an enemy of this doctrine. 12. Therefore, in the pool of pure conduct of the Kadampa tradition, free from the faults of biased waves, may the white-bodied one, full of enthusiasm and diligence, always enjoy the joy and happiness of reading without satiety. 13. Even the great wisdom of the immaculate two knowledges arises from relying on this supreme path, and considering that the root of all afflictions is ignorance, greatly increase your diligence. 14. If the swan of thought extracts the white essence from the ocean of words that elaborate the meaning of what is heard, then the strength of the ten powers of definitive knowledge will be perfected, and the expanse of knowable things will be measured naturally. 15. Furthermore, (according to the meaning of 'Determining the Types of Meanings') if one analyzes the single word "Shing Ön" with excessive elaboration, one will lose the essential meaning of the context and fail to grasp it, just as the meaning of what is said is not certain. 16. Therefore, relying on the key of definitive and interpretable meanings (according to the meaning of 'Mindfulness and Rest'), open the door to the treasury of sutras, tantras, and Dharma, and carefully examine them with the three kinds of investigation, scriptural authority, and reasoning. It is appropriate to take the precious essence of the definitive meaning. 17. If one focuses on faults, even in the words of the Victorious Ones, one will perceive faults as the fruition of karma, like Devadatta. Measure the Buddha's words and commentaries with valid means, and regard Rongzom Chenpo as one who has attained excellent definitive knowledge. 18. Thus, taking to heart the points of acceptance and rejection that have been determined by the combination of listening and contemplation, without relying on others, and practicing them in the most subtle way, is entering the conduct of the noble Bodhisattvas. 19. Therefore, for the results of actions, faith, and taking refuge, renunciation, dependent origination, selflessness, Bodhicitta, emptiness, the generation and completion stages, and the instructions of Dzogchen, experience the realization directly through meditation. 20. Furthermore, relying on the supreme Lama and friends who possess the qualities of experience and realization,
