Sound in the realm of the ear, smell in the realm of the nose, taste in the realm of the tongue, touch in the realm of body and mind, and in the realm of the mind, clinging to phenomena such as dharmas as if they are real as they appear – this is called looking outwards. Staring intently at what appears as form, without making any affirmation or negation about it, resting in its essence of clear, empty, naked state – this is called looking inwards. Similarly, sound, smell, taste, touch, and dharmas are also explained in this way. The meaning of "black and confused" is: because the mindfulness guard is lost, one is confused by mere conceptual thoughts without recognizing the true nature, hence it is called black and confused. The meaning of "awareness nakedly released" is: the past mind has ceased, the future mind has not yet arisen, and the present mind is empty, clear, bright, and nakedly present. Remaining unwavering from that state of realization is called awareness nakedly released. What is "instantaneous sameness awareness"? It is when the present awareness recognizes its own stainless nature and maintains that continuity. This is called instantaneous sameness awareness. What is the meaning of "the four kayas complete on top of mind, conceptual thought, afflictions, and appearances"? The essence of mind is unborn, which is the Dharmakāya (ཆོ༵ས་སྐུ༵,chos sku,Dharmakāya); its unceasing radiance is the Sambhogakāya (ལོ༵ངས་སྐུ༵,longs sku,Saṃbhogakāya); its capacity to manifest in any way is the Nirmāṇakāya (སྤྲུ༵ལ་སྐུ༵,sprul sku,Nirmāṇakāya); the inseparability of these three in essence is the Svābhāvikakāya (ངོ༵་བོ༵་ཉི༵ད་སྐུ༵,ngo bo nyid sku,Svābhāvikakāya). This can be applied analogously to other phenomena as well. Furthermore, the meaning of "Śamatha-Vipaśyanā union complete on top of mind, conceptual thought, afflictions, and appearances" is: when conceptual thought arises as a path, the mind remains steadily on its essence, which is Śamatha (ཞི༵་གན༵ས་,zhi gnas,Śamatha); seeing its essence as clear, empty, and naked is Vipaśyanā (ལྷ༵ག་མཐོ༵ང་,lhag mthong,Vipaśyanā); the inseparability of these two is the union of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā (ཞི༵་ལྷ༵ག་ཟུ༵ང་དུ་འཇུ༵ག་པ་,zhi lhag zung du 'jug pa,Śamatha-Vipaśyanā-yuganaddha). Similarly, when desire arises as a path, the mind remains steadily in its essential state, which is Śamatha; seeing that essence as clear, empty, and naked is Vipaśyanā; the inseparability of these two is the union of Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. The saying "transforming desire into the path" refers to something similar. This can be applied analogously to other afflictions and appearances as well. What is the measure of "awareness recognizing its own nature"? There are three aspects to this. (Missing text) is the measure of awareness recognizing its own nature, which arises gradually. It is not through gradual practice, but rather when the lama directly introduces awareness.

From this moment on, whatever appears is realized as naked rigpa-emptiness, which is the measure of recognizing the nature of cigchö (ཅི༵ག་ཅ༵ར་བ༵)'s rigpa. This life is short and laziness is great, but even if naked rigpa-emptiness does not manifest, if a single genuine realization arises in the bardo, that is the measure of recognizing the nature of tögal (ཐོད་རྒ༵ལ་)'s rigpa. ༧Regarding "Are all appearances mind or not mind?" According to the views of some Kagyu practitioners, some consider appearances to be mind. However, in our own system, it must be asserted that appearances are not mind, but only mind. As long as it has not become emptiness, one must guard it; once it has become emptiness, one must abide in that state, without separating from that state. The meaning of trekchö (ཁྲེགས་ཆོད་) is said to be extracting rigpa nakedly and guarding it clearly, so this point alone is crucial and must be understood. Thus it was said. Furthermore, in the commentary on "Resting the Mind in Meditation," the "Pure Chariot," it is also said: Whatever obstacles arise, identify them and, with devotion and prayers to the lama, perform a fierce and powerful blessing. Observe from where the obstacle arose, where it is, and whom it harms. If these are not found, and rigpa is present, naked, clear, and bright, then everything is liberated into the self-radiance of rigpa, and such a person is called a yogi who knows obstacles as accomplishments. Moreover, whatever appears, whatever happens, and whatever turns into good or bad, is nothing other than the play of rigpa. Happiness is rigpa, suffering is rigpa, sickness is rigpa, joy is rigpa, and there is nothing other than rigpa. Understanding this point is extremely blissful. I have dispelled all obstacles here, so I am extremely happy. When something incompatible with obstacles arises, a yogi needs to completely transform it into virtuous activity. Thus it was said. ༧In short, whatever is seen by the eyes, heard by the ears, smelled by the nose, tasted by the tongue, touched by the body, and remembered by the mind, etc., whatever appears and whatever arises, all phenomena, whether they appear as good, bad, or middling in form, in reality, if one knows that their essence abides as naked rigpa-emptiness, there will be no famine of practice. Whatever arises from the primordially pure nature will appear as an aid to meditation. Here, the secret words of Dzogchen are the unsurpassed qualities of the great vidyadharas. As it was said, just as the answer given by Lhatsun Kunzang. May it be virtuous! Khenchen Khyentse Norbu.
