Collection of Mind Training Teachings LJ36: Instructions on Separating from the Four Attachments Instructions on Separating from the Four Attachments Om Svasti Siddhi. When the Great Sakya Master (Tibetan: ས་སྐྱ་པ་ཆེན་པོ་, meaning: the great master of the Sakya school) was twelve years old, he practiced the sadhana of Manjushri (Tibetan: འཇམ་པའི་དབྱངས་, meaning: gentle voice) for six months. Once, in the midst of a mass of light, on a jeweled throne, Jetsun Manjushri (Tibetan: རྗེ་བཙུན་འཇམ་དབྱངས, meaning: venerable gentle voice), red-yellow in color, with the mudra of teaching the Dharma, seated in a posture of excellence, with two Bodhisattvas attending on his right and left. Having directly seen this, the main deity (Manjushri) said: 'If you are attached to this life, you are not a Dharma practitioner; if you are attached to the three realms, you have no renunciation; if you are attached to self-interest, you are not a Bodhisattva; if attachment arises, it is not the correct view.' Reflecting on the meaning of these words, he realized that all practices of the path of the perfections are included in the mind training of separating from the four attachments. Therefore, he gained a special certainty about all Dharmas. Samapta Ithi. The Separation from the Four Attachments by Jetsun Drakpa Gyaltsen (Tibetan: གྲགས་པ་རྒྱལ་མཚན, meaning: fame banner). I take refuge from the depths of my heart in the kind root guru (Tibetan: བཀའ་དྲིན་ཅན་གྱི་བླ་མ་, meaning: kind lama) and the compassionate yidam deity (Tibetan: ཡི་དམ་ལྷ་, meaning: tutelary deity). Please bless me. There is no need to engage in non-Dharmic activities. When engaging in Dharma-like practice, I seek the instructions on separating from the four attachments. I will now tell you about it. If you are attached to this life, you are not a Dharma practitioner; if you are attached to samsara, you have no renunciation; if you are attached to self-interest, you are not a Bodhisattva; if attachment arises, it is not the correct view. First, do not be attached to this life. Morality, listening, thinking, and meditating. If you practice with the aim of this life, you are not a true practitioner; you should abandon it. First, when talking about morality, it is the root of achieving higher realms, the ladder to liberation, and the antidote to suffering. Morality is indispensable. However, morality that is attached to this life is the root of achieving the eight worldly concerns, scorns those who have less morality than oneself, is jealous of those who have more morality than oneself, and is hypocritical about one's own morality. It is the seed of creating lower realms; hypocritical morality should be abandoned. A person who engages in listening and thinking has the wealth of increasing knowledge, is the lamp that dispels ignorance, is the guide for leading beings, and is the seed of the Dharmakaya. Listening and thinking are indispensable. However, listening and thinking that are attached to this life are the wealth of increasing pride, despise those who have less listening and thinking than oneself, are jealous of those who have more listening and thinking than oneself, and seek retinue and wealth. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abandon the root of accomplishing bad migrations, and set aside the hearing and thinking of the eight worldly dharmas! All those who practice meditation should have the antidote to abandon afflictions, the root to accomplish the path of liberation, the enjoyment of realizing the nature of reality, and the seed to accomplish Buddhahood. Meditation is indispensable. The meditation that aims at this life, even if staying in solitude, is full of bustle, has the recitation of idle talk, is critical of hearing and thinking, is jealous of others' meditation, and one's own meditation is distracted. Set aside the contemplation of the eight worldly dharmas! To accomplish Nirvana, one must also abandon attachment to the three realms. To abandon attachment to the three realms, one must remember the faults of samsara. First, the suffering of suffering is the suffering of the three bad migrations. If you think about it carefully, you will feel goosebumps. Once it falls, there is no way to avoid it. Without cultivating the virtue of abandoning evil, but doing the farming of bad migrations, wherever you are, it will be in vain. Thinking about the suffering of change, there is the possibility of going from heaven to bad migrations. Indra may be born as an ordinary person. The sun and moon may go into darkness. The Chakravartin may be born as a servant. Believe in this based on the scriptures. But ordinary people cannot understand it, so look at the changes in people's appearances. Rich people become poor, strong people become weak, and many people become one. There are countless things like that. Thinking about the suffering of conditioning, there is no time to engage in any activities. It is painful to have many people, and it is painful to have few. It is painful to be rich, and it is painful to be hungry. All of life is spent in preparation. Everyone dies in the midst of preparation. Even if they die, they have not finished preparing, and they begin preparing for the next life. Those who are attached to the heap of suffering of samsara are in vain! If you abandon attachment, you will attain Nirvana. If you attain Nirvana, you will attain happiness. Abandon the four attachments and sing the song of realization! There is no benefit in being liberated alone. The sentient beings of the three realms are all parents. Leaving parents in the midst of suffering, and wanting to be happy yourself is in vain! The suffering of the three realms should ripen on me. My merit should be taken by sentient beings. By the blessings of this merit, may all sentient beings become Buddhas! No matter how I am, I should be in the state of Dharma. With clinging, there is no liberation. If you explain it in detail, there is no liberation in clinging to existence, and there is no heaven in clinging to non-existence. If you do not know how to cling to both, then leave it as you please in the state of non-duality! All dharmas... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
