Mind Training Teachings Collection LJ5: A Commentary on the Root Verses of Great Vehicle Mind Training A Commentary on the Root Verses of Great Vehicle Mind Training Homage to the glorious and precious one, the king who swiftly bestows all happiness and accomplishes all purposes. First, [train the mind with the three types of individuals as the object of reliance, generate the two aspirations of aspiration and action, and with one precept] learn the preliminaries [contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment, the law of cause and effect, and the faults of samsara]. All phenomena [encompassing self and others, external and internal, container and contents] are contemplated as dreamlike [appearing as existent due to the power of mental delusion]. Examine the nature of unborn [uninterrupted] awareness [the mind that realizes this]. The antidote itself [which severs both body and mind in this way], being [unapprehendable], is liberated in its own place [free from grasping at existence or non-existence]. In between sessions [after that], act as an individual who is like an illusion [relying on the previous two during the time of arising]. Practice giving [giving all merit of body, possessions, and the three times to others] and taking alternately. Carry those two [giving and taking] on the wind [when exhaling]. Transform the three realms [of suffering, pleasure, and indifference] and the three poisons [of attachment, aversion, and ignorance, which cut through them] into three roots of virtue. In all activities [such as accumulation], train with words [by entrusting oneself to them]. The container [external] and contents [internal], the sins [resulting in suffering], of samsara, Transform [the field of afflictions] adverse conditions [arising from sentient beings and the elements] into bodhi [whatever arises, everything]. [As a companion] all blame [how] rests on one [ego-grasping, without attributing any undesirable events to others]. Meditate on all beings, on humans and non-humans, enemies and friends, without distinction, and on those who harm as being kind. Meditate on grasping the deluded appearance of one's own mind as the deity, harm, harmer, and cause of harm, holding them as a staff. Protecting the nature of mind, which is emptiness of all things, is the supreme among all protections. The four combinations: offering to the deity and guru, purifying sins, offering to spirits, and offering to dharma protectors, are the supreme methods of possessing means. Apply whatever is possible at the moment to meditation. Adverse conditions in which suffering and intense attachment and aversion arise are the key instructions for practicing in one lifetime. The essence is condensed. The five powers should be accustomed to and applied. By the aspiration of the white seed not degenerating, practice the conduct of Tara, which is the key instruction for transference in the Great Vehicle. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding speech: The previous five powers (referring to the five strengths: Bodhicitta, Steadfastness, Familiarity, Reproach, and Aspiration) are particularly important here, cherish the code of conduct. The key points of all Dharmas converge into one intention. Observe whether afflictions can be overcome, there are two witnesses: the words of others and one's own mind. If one's own mind does not feel ashamed, one can train the mind unhindered on desires. Mainly focus on maintaining inner peace and happiness. If one can overcome distractions, it indicates that the antidotes are well-practiced. In general, always learn three aspects: commitment, not letting the eyes go to waste, and meaning. Place aspirations first, do not rely on changing the attachment to self-love, keep it as it is. Do not speak of the shortcomings of body, speech, and actions. Do not particularly think about those who have entered the gate of Dharma. The result is, through training the mind, abandon all expectations of this life, the next life, and even attaining Buddhahood. Avoid consuming virtuous deeds that are toxic or mixed with ego-grasping. Do not rely on those who complain about harming others. Do not retaliate against bad words, do not repay evil with evil. Do not attribute faults to anyone, whether human or non-human. Do not impose unwanted burdens on others. Do not compete in public, do not attack others for your own benefit. Do not deceive others for your own benefit. Do not train the mind like a beggar. Do not regard gods as demons. Do not cause suffering to others for your own happiness. Give all wealth, such as food, to others. Regarding the inner person: First, practice through actions at both the beginning and the end. In order, first is being beneficial, second is patience, do not feel discouraged if either of the two is not satisfied. Protect the vows obtained from Dharma practice, and the special vows obtained from this teaching, as if protecting your life. Learn to overcome three difficulties: difficult to remember the antidotes to afflictions, difficult to prevent the arising of afflictions, and difficult to completely cut off afflictions. Follow a qualified Lama, who can utilize your wisdom, and possesses complete inner and outer favorable conditions. Accept the three main causes. Meditate on the three losses of respect for the Lama. Possess the three inseparable ones (Guru, Yidam, Protector), the three purities (body, speech, mind), and the three of body, speech, and mind. Live with those who are hateful and unpleasant to you. View those who help you train your mind with a non-dependent attitude. If you deviate from the path, use training the mind as a reason to stop.
