The Biography of Naropa's Twelve Hardships Homage to the Guru! It is said that Jowo Naropa (the尊者) was from Kashmir (Kache) in India. In a cemetery in Kashmir, he recited the Hevajra (胜乐金刚) mantra through the seven-letter door, and at dawn, he had recited one million times, causing the earth to shake. He received a prophecy: 'Go to the east of India, where there is a guru named Tilopa. You have a connection with him.' So, Naropa set out to meet Tilopa, but on the way, he regretted it, thinking, 'Eastern India is vast, and I didn't ask where Tilopa lives.' He continued, arriving at a monastery called 'Edana Tsuggi Norbu.' Naropa requested to teach there, and the monks also requested him to teach. At that time, a yogi wearing black cotton clothes, with blood-red eyes and a sharp gaze, was holding the remains of two dead fish in a container, roasting them by a blazing fire. The monks said, 'Hit him!' The yogi said, 'Don't you like it?' The monks said, 'Who would like roasting live fish in a place where monks live?' The yogi said, 'Okay, let's go!' After saying that, the fish flew into the sky. The monks then folded their hands, thinking, 'This yogi is an accomplished one, please forgive us.' and asked for his forgiveness. Naropa thought, 'This person is Tilopa.' So he went out, offered a mandala, prostrated three times, circumambulated three times, and then offered flowers in his hands to Tilopa, saying, 'Please accept me!' Tilopa didn't say a word, not knowing what to do, he went to the eaves of the Ona temple, dangling his feet and said, 'Who dares to jump from here?' Naropa looked around, there was no one, thinking, 'The Guru is talking to me!' So he jumped down, and the bones above pierced into the bottom, and the bones below broke and pierced into the top, the pain was unbearable. Just as his consciousness was about to leave his body, the yogi came over and asked, 'What's wrong?' The Guru said, 'You asked who dares to jump from here, I jumped, and now I'm going to die.' The yogi said, 'It's nothing.' After saying that, he grabbed Naropa's hand and shook it, Naropa immediately recovered. It turned out that Tilopa had the ability to bring the dead back to life. First, there are the twelve hardships performed by Tilopa. Also, when Naropa followed Tilopa to a certain place, generally in the southern Nepal area, there were many aquatic creatures, especially in a body of water about an arm's length wide, full of aquatic creatures. Tilopa was unwilling to wade through, so Naropa said, 'Shall I make a bridge so that the Lama can walk over me?' Tilopa said, 'Okay.' If he removed them all at once, the creatures would die; if he didn't remove them, he couldn't bear the pain. So he removed them one by one, but only cleared an area the size of his palm. Just as he was becoming distraught, Tilopa came and asked, 'What's wrong?' Naropa said, 'I did as you said, Lama, and now I'm about to die.' Tilopa said, 'Nothing's wrong.' Then he grabbed him with his hand, making a 'Segor' sound, and the creatures all went back into the water. That's the second thing. Another time, Tilopa picked a garland of flowers from a Naga and said to Naropa, 'Two relatives are bringing a bride over here, take this garland as an ornament. If they are happy, and if you don't give it to them, touch the bride's breasts.' Naropa stood there holding the garland. When the two relatives brought the bride, they put the garland on him, and they were happy, but he didn't give it to them, and instead touched the bride's breasts. So the bride's relatives grabbed him and said, 'How dare you touch the bride's breasts!' And then they beat him. Just as he was becoming distraught, Tilopa came and asked, 'What's wrong?' Naropa said, 'I did as you said, Lama, and now I'm about to die.' Tilopa said, 'Nothing's wrong.' Then he grabbed him with his hand, making a 'Segor' sound, and he was restored to his original state. That's the third thing. Also, Tilopa said to Naropa, 'Don't eat or drink, just keep going like this.' Naropa didn't eat or drink, and didn't rest, just kept going, and after a while he fainted.
