MARPA22 Instructions of Marpa: The Peg for Transforming Afflictions into the Path 2-1-66b Homage to the venerable Lamas! Regarding the peg for transforming afflictions into the path, although there are many afflictions, here it refers only to the desire of lust. If male pleasure arises from the three pleasures, and the affliction increases on its own, making it impossible to engage in virtuous practice, then for a person with desire: 'His action is Vajrasattva.' 2-1-67a As fire burns, and is extinguished by fire itself; likewise, one tormented by afflictions, will be liberated by afflictions themselves.' Therefore, to transform this into the path, there are two: approach and accomplishment. Approach relies on four key points: the time key point is when bliss arises, the body key point is in accordance with tummo. The speech key point is to utter short Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:seed syllable), long Hūṃ (藏文:ཧཱུྃ,梵文天城体:हुं,梵文罗马拟音:hūṃ,汉语字面意思:seed syllable), and Hik (藏文:ཧིག,梵文天城体:हिक्,梵文罗马拟音:hik,汉语字面意思:sound). The knowledge key point is to visualize the bodhicitta like a shooting star arising from the secret place to the Haṃ (藏文:ཧཾ,梵文天城体:हं,梵文罗马拟音:haṃ,汉语字面意思:seed syllable) of great bliss at the crown of the head. Second, accomplishment has two aspects: with conceptualization and without conceptualization. With conceptualization, one contemplates the inside of the body as vast, and the consort at the navel, guiding and enjoying as before. Then guide and enjoy to the heart, and so on. Without conceptualization, 'The consort is the key point of a qualified object.' If the bindu is not lost, then rely on a mudra of another body as it arises. Thus, whichever of the two paths, when great bliss arises, that bliss causes a swoon, and the conceptualization of grasping ceases, transforming into non-conceptual awareness, and the affliction naturally subsides. There, the bliss with outflows ceases, and transforms into 2-1-67b bliss without outflows. Then, inserting into the root channel: place the weight of the body on the ring finger of the left hand, and by exerting the wind, it will become stable. Mixing with the wind: practice the vase breathing of wind. Then, act without effort. By this, one becomes non-conceptual, and thus transforms it into the path. The peg for transforming afflictions into the path, Athi Homage to the venerable Lamas! Regarding the peg for the dissolution of thoughts in their own place, there are two: the conceptual thoughts towards external objects, and the mental fabrications within the mind. The first has four key points: the time key point is when the mind cannot be stabilized due to reliance on the white and red appearances of external objects. The body key point is the same as the others. The object key point is the white and red appearances of external objects, 'The appearing white and red is the key point of the object.' The knowledge key point is to fully exert awareness on whichever of the white and red appearances that conceptual thoughts arise from, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One should look in this way. By looking in this way, first, a consciousness of grasping arises towards an object, then it transforms into non-thought and is liberated in its own nature. Secondly, the method for the arising of conceptual thoughts from the inner mind to be liberated in their own nature: The crucial point of time is that even without an object, the focus does not remain, but arises momentarily. The crucial point of the body is like Caṇḍālī (Tantra yoga). The crucial point of the object is whatever thought arises. The crucial point of consciousness is to turn the eyes inward. Make external objects invisible. Combine the focus and consciousness and direct them inward. Afterwards, it is impossible not to turn into non-thought. This is called 'focusing the eyes and consciousness on the target'. At the same time, in the post-meditation state, practice in the manner of self-liberation. The nail of self-liberation of conceptual thoughts, A thi (Tibetan seed syllable). Homage to the venerable gurus! The nail for averting obstacles. Generally, there are two types of obstacles: outer and inner. Outer obstacles include humans and non-humans; inner obstacles include afflictions and conceptual thoughts. Again, there are two types: inner, including the elements and their transformations. The former refers to the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. The latter refers to illnesses caused by imbalances in these four elements. One should avert obstacles by balancing the elements. Afflictions and conceptual thoughts should be averted by transforming afflictions into the path and liberating conceptual thoughts in their own nature. Similarly, for external non-humans, one should avert obstacles through a state of mental equilibrium. Here, the focus is on obstacles caused by humans. These can be divided into three categories: ordinary people do not create obstacles, but enemies do. For yogis who have attained warmth, one should perform the activity of subjugating and then converting them. If this is not done, one will commit the sin of abandoning sentient beings and the sin of abandoning the teachings of the Buddha. If the yogi has not attained warmth, one should regard patience as supreme and avert obstacles. For relatives who obstruct with Dharma in a friendly manner, one should avert obstacles by making a firm decision not to follow their wishes. If obstacles caused by non-humans are not suppressed with harsh methods, but instead cause one to lose faith and be swayed, thus causing obstacles to arise in a gentle manner, one should be aware of this. One should not be controlled by them, but should avert obstacles. The nail instruction for clearing obstacles on the path is the uncommon obstacle-clearing method of Nāropā (Indian Buddhist master). All illnesses of yogis should be overcome through meditation, for if they are treated with medicine, they will be no different from ordinary people. The method for yogis to clear inner and outer obstacles is complete. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
