The Preliminary Illuminating Mirror of Academic Calculation. The Preliminary Illuminating Mirror of Academic Calculation. Herein resides the treatise called "The Preliminary Illuminating Mirror of Academic Calculation." Om Svasti! The wisdom of all Buddhas is embodied in the form of the youthful prince Manjushri. To Manjushri, the Lion of Speech, I prostrate with utmost reverence. To inspire intelligent individuals who aspire to engage in arithmetic, as a seed to stimulate their thinking, I shall write an academic introductory guide like a clear mirror. It is divided into three parts: what is to be calculated, what calculates, and the method of calculation. First, there are two types of academics: the academic of self-nature basis and the academic of ignorant delusion. The first is the emptiness of reality, the nature of all phenomena, free from the net of all elaborations. If one realizes this, one transcends arithmetic. The second is the self-appearance of the mind, where the dependent origination of phenomena is unceasing, manifesting as various phenomenal existences, capable of distinguishing between benefits and harms, acceptance and rejection. To calculate this, it can be seen as symbolized by three turtles. The abiding turtle is the realm of Dharma, transcending arithmetic without limbs. When one realizes this as it is, it is individually self-aware and immovable. The so-called arising turtle is the gradual formation of the four elements from space. It shows various lords of the sky, appearing as the arrangement of sentient beings' karma. Then there is the turtle of existence, which is the generator of various forms. From the yellow Mahā Golden Turtle, the eight great trigram gods and so on arise. The realms of existence are gradually liberated, and the container and contents, directions and times, acceptance and rejection occur. Third, the rules of worldly phenomena, the treatise on the method of calculating acceptance and rejection without mixing, is the supreme one that illuminates the world. In order to teach, on the five-peaked mountain of China, from the burl of the Triśa tree, through various vehicle's skillful methods, one who contemplates for the benefit of beings, incarnated as the bodhisattva Manjushri and was born. Just like the turtle of existence, symbolized by the emanation turtle, he spoke the gate of academics to the eight classes of gods, nagas, asuras, and humans' five retinues. Knowing good and bad, knowing the times, all meanings are clear, but due to necessity, when it was buried again as a treasure, at the urging of the holder of Druzhi, the great master of Oddiyana, incarnated as the four-faced Brahma, the goddess Namgyal, the naga Jokpo, etc.

Homage to the omniscient ones of samsara and nirvana! The beginning of the cycle is the limitless Gabtse. In this land of Tibet, there arose three periods of translation. From that root, the various instructions that spread are beyond expression. Although all dharmas are empty in nature, for sentient beings with conceptual minds, what is considered valid is the conventional. The clear way of unerring dependent origination, all converge on the path of calculation. Therefore, this method was taught by the Victorious Ones. All calculations are based on the body of the tortoise. The head faces south, the tail faces north, the right flank faces east, the left flank faces west, the limbs face the corners, lying supine. From the center to the Heavenly Iron Mountain, fire, water, earth, wood, and wind to the center. What is called outer, inner, and intermediate calculation, are the year, Parkha, and Mewa calculations. The upper east is the Tiger, the lower east is the Rabbit, the southeast is the Dragon, the upper south is the Snake, the lower south is the Horse, the southwest is the Sheep, the upper west is the Monkey, the lower west is the Bird, the northwest is the Dog, the upper north is the Pig, the lower north is the Mouse, the northeast is the Ox. Mouse, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog are Yang, the remaining six are Yin years. The beginning of the year is the Mouse year, the beginning of the month is the first spring Tiger month, the beginning of the time is the dawn Rabbit hour. These are endowed with the five elements. The dwelling of the Parkhas in the directions are: Li is fire, Khon is earth, Dwa is iron, Khen is heaven, Kham is water, Ging is mountain, Zin is wood, Zon is wind. The four directions are their respective elements, the four corners are considered the earth element. Whichever Mewa is calculated in the center, for example, like five entering the center, center five, heaven six, iron seven, etc., are arranged in the order of the previous one. The twelve, beginning with the Mouse, circulate in order as the heavenly stem years, likewise, they also circulate in months, days, and times. These, by the power of the five elements, are known as the sixty-year cycle. The recognition of their power: the year and month are combined, the day and hour are calculated separately. Year, month, day, and time, are in order, mother, son, and dharmata. Therefore, the heavenly stem years are divided into male and female, the same element is in order as the son. The recognition of the life, body, luck, and spirit horse of those sixty cycles: life is the element's dwelling direction, Tiger and Rabbit are wood, Horse and Snake are fire, Bird and Monkey are iron, Mouse and Pig are water, Dog, Dragon, Ox, and Sheep are earth. Showing the key to the body: Ox, Sheep, Horse, Mouse are counted from Dwa, Dog, Dragon, Pig, Snake are counted from Ging, Tiger, Rabbit, Bird, Monkey are counted from Khon, Iron, water, fire, earth, wood.
