However, if paintings are to be made, the Teacher has permitted the painting of Dharma, Vinaya, and so forth. If those praised by the great masters of noble India are painted, the accumulation of goodness in this life and the next will increase. Among these, the mandalas and images spoken of in outer and inner tantras are not the subject here. Here, we will explain how, according to the sacred Vinaya, the dwellings of those who have renounced the world should be painted. First, regarding the house as the basis for painting, whether it is a large or small temple, or a large, medium, or small hermitage, or a surrounding corridor, although not entirely in accordance with Tibetan conditions, we will assume that there is some resemblance.

It is said that Vajrapani and others should be depicted with weapons in an evil manner, and this is also what is currently painted in the Vajrapani gatehouse. In the gatehouse is the Wheel of Life. It should be made into five parts. Above are gods and humans, etc. The four continents. Beings born miraculously, like a bucket being passed along, with death and birth, etc., are also there. In the center are desire, hatred, and ignorance, etc., in the form of a pigeon, snake, and pig. The first two are consumed by ignorance. Around the perimeter are the twelve links of dependent origination. Everything is held by impermanence itself. It is said. This also happened when the Buddha was alive, two great Shravakas went to all places such as hell every day by means of miraculous powers, and directly saw those who experienced the results of their actions. In order to encourage those who were ordained but were lazy and unmotivated in the Dharma, they were asked to draw in the gatehouse and other places. Later, the Teacher himself, based on that foundation, gave permission to draw this Wheel of Life in the gatehouse of Jeta Grove. That is also what I heard. In this regard, first, the symbol of the Wheel of Life is a ring surrounded by three layers. The second ring is large, how should the first and last two connect? The lower side of the second ring should be divided into three parts, and the upper side should be divided into two parts, making a total of five parts. It is sufficient to divide this into five parts, drawing it like the spokes of a wheel is irrelevant. On the upper right side of the two parts, draw the gods above and the asuras below. In the one part below that, it is necessary to draw the animal realm, so in its upper part draw the asuras, and the ones below supporting them, it should be drawn as if they are mixed together. On the upper right side, draw beings of the four continents representing the human world. Draw people with huge bodies enjoying treasures of jewels, trees, and women, etc., and in some places, draw the forms of birth, old age, sickness, and death according to common practice. After that, in the part below that, draw the preta realm. In the middle part below that, draw the realms of Yama and the hell realm as symbols. In the realm of the gods, draw miraculous births. In the center of the wheel
