Instructions Given to Lhawang Tashi. Instructions Given to Lhawang Tashi. Herein are the Instructions Given to Lhawang Tashi. I take refuge in Guru Padmasambhava! May the Kagyu lamas grant their blessings! Turn the minds of the faithful towards the Dharma! May you attain the irreversible path of liberation! The protector of the snowy lands, Atisha, said: In the midst of many, examine your speech; When alone, examine your mind. These are the two condensed instructions. The mind is the root of all faults, The mouth is the door through which faults arise. Therefore, always guard these two. All of samsara and nirvana is one's own mind, Not even a particle comes from elsewhere. Happiness and suffering, good and bad, superior and inferior, All are the fabrications of the mind. When one's own mind is pure, one is a Buddha, Wherever one dwells is a pure land. Whatever one does is the nature of Dharma, Whatever appears is the adornment of the play of wisdom. If one's own mind is not pure, Even a Buddha is seen as a fault. Anger arises even towards one's parents, Most appearances arise as enemies. Hope and fear, attachment and hatred, are continuous. One does not listen to advice, and wastes one's life. With whomever one associates, one is not in harmony, Wherever one stays, there is no happiness. No matter how much one has, one is never satisfied, One thing is obtained, but another is desired. Distracted by the appearances of this life, Even if one thinks of practicing Dharma, One wastes one's life in procrastination. When the thought of renunciation does not arise, One wants to hold on tightly to everything. One becomes so miserly that one is stingy even with a needle. When new devotion arises, One thinks of nothing other than the lama. After a long time, wrong views arise. When new faith arises, One adds a second virtuous act on top of the first. When one gets old, everything vanishes into the expanse. When one finds a new good friend, One cherishes their body and life more than one's own. The novelty wears off, and one turns into an enemy. The root of all these things is, Because one has not grasped one's own mind. When one is able to control one's own mind, One does not need to seek solitude elsewhere. If there is no conceptual thought, that is solitude. One does not need to seek the lama outside, Mind itself is the lama, is the Buddha. One does not need to doubt the result of virtuous actions, Undistracted virtuous action is the essence. One does not need to deliberately abandon distraction, If one relies on mindfulness, one is self-liberated. One does not need to be afraid of the arising of afflictions, If one recognizes one's own nature, that is wisdom. Because samsara and nirvana do not arise from anything other than this single moment of one's own mind, Therefore, always observe the mind.

Please guard (your) mind! If you cannot subdue your own mind, the external enemies cannot be exhausted. If you can subdue the anger in your heart, all the enemies on earth will be pacified. If contentment does not arise in your heart, even if you have a lot of wealth, you are like a beggar. A person who has contentment and renounces attachment is always rich even without wealth. When doing worldly affairs, and when practicing Dharma and virtuous deeds, when joy arises in your heart, that habit will cause you to be reborn in the heavens. But that is also impermanent samsara. If you look at the essence of joy, you will see that it is emptiness, and that is the path to liberation. Dharma and worldly affairs, if bad suffering occurs, as well as anger, hatred, greed, etc., following the afflictive emotions and thoughts, is the cause of being reborn in the three lower realms. The suffering of being born there is unimaginable. Whatever afflictive emotions and suffering arise, by looking at its own nature, it will disappear into emptiness. There is no other wisdom than that. Because it is inseparable from one's own mind, it is most important to always protect one's own mind. Protecting the mind includes all the Dharma. The method of protection, Bodhisattva Shantideva said, for those who want to protect their minds, they need mindfulness and awareness. He said to guard with all effort. I pray with folded hands for this. As it is said, practice is most important. Therefore, all the external appearances that the six senses come into contact with are the illusion of the one mind. If you take and abandon, then the person who takes and abandons is wrong. Although the path of equal taste is supreme, for beginners, the view should be high and the behavior should be meticulous. Repeatedly think that it is difficult to obtain a human body with leisure and opportunity, and that life is impermanent. Generate definite knowledge that the law of cause and effect is infallible. When you see or hear of the death of others, know that it is a teaching shown to you. When you see the changes of spring, summer, autumn and winter, remember that everything is impermanent. When you see bees and honey, know that wealth is unnecessary. When you see a house collapsing and a village empty, know that the dwelling house is impermanent. When you see others separated from friends, remember that your own friends will also be separated. When others encounter unpleasant sudden events, remember that you will also encounter them. Everything of yourself and others is like a dream, and there is not the slightest bit of true establishment. When your mind is not fabricated and defiled, and you abide in your original face, all external and internal dharmas are emptiness. Realize the union of clarity and emptiness like the sky. That is the ultimate Bodhicitta. If you do not understand this, then sentient beings...
