Homage to the glorious and venerable lamas. The concise introduction to the Great Seal is the three: ground, path, and fruition. Here, the essence of the ground is one's own mind or awareness. It does not exist as a material entity composed of shapes such as squares or circles, or colors such as white or red, not even a single atom exists, therefore it is empty. The unceasing radiance of emptiness is clear and limpid, without being stained by impurities, therefore it is clear. The nature or essence of these two, clarity and emptiness, is awareness. It knows and understands what does not appear and what appears, and various things, but its essence is not established as anything, this is called the ālaya. Here, clarity, awareness, and emptiness are inseparable. Because this ālaya does not recognize the reality of the ālaya, there arises ālaya ignorance or ālaya delusion. However the ālaya is deluded, the essence of the ālaya, the three of clarity, awareness, and emptiness, does not become bad. Even if one realizes enlightenment and becomes a Buddha, it does not become better, therefore it is called ālaya. Because the ālaya itself does not recognize itself, various apprehenders and apprehended appear. Due to the power of the apprehended, various actions are accumulated, and due to the power of actions, one wanders in samsara, therefore it is called the impure ālaya consciousness. Due to the kindness of the venerable lama, by meditating on the path, the reality of the ground itself, the realization of itself is perfected, thereby attaining the dharmakāya. The dharmakāya is the basis for attaining all the qualities of the Buddha's state, and the two form bodies, etc., therefore it is called the pure wisdom ālaya. The essence of these two grounds is the three of clarity, awareness, and emptiness, therefore they are the same. When not realized, it is the ground of samsara, and when realized, it is the ground of nirvana. Because it is divided by conceptual thought, therefore there are two ālaya. The path has three: view, meditation, and conduct. The view is to ascertain the reality of all phenomena, which is the reality of the ālaya as explained above. Its unceasing radiance appears as various objects and subjects, that is, all the various appearances of external objects are one's own." } ] ============================================================

Since mind-essence appears as this and that, Various appearances are the appearance of mind-essence; Because of various appearances, mind appears. Among those various appearances, They are composed of substances such as form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, So they can be seen by the eye, heard by the ear, and so on. However, in the base of all (ālaya), There are no shapes, colors, etc., so the various appearances of external objects are not mind. Therefore, various appearances and mind are neither the same nor different, There is not a single truly established external object appearance separate from mind. Mind is not composed of substances of shape and color, External object appearances are composed of substances of shape and color, so they are not the same, Just as something that is a substance and something that is not are not the same. Meditation is: Do not think about how happiness and suffering occurred in the past. Do not think about the analytical thoughts of what to do and what to do now. Even if you meditate now, do not keep it in mind, There is no need to meditate on the shape of this meditation, such as square or round. Do not abandon anything with the appearance of shape and color because it is not this meditation. This present mind is left in its own state without any modification. Do not hope for happiness, clarity, non-thought, etc., to come, And do not worry about them not coming. Hope and worry are obstacles to seeing the meaning of the natural state, so do not hope or worry. Without tightening or constricting awareness, In the state of the natural expression of awareness, Maintain it without distraction or meditation. Even though you do not think of anything in this way, When various thoughts arise, By looking closely at the thoughts that arise in the mind, The thoughts will appear as emptiness without being identified or fixated upon. Like clear ocean water stirred by the wind, Appearing as bubbles and waves, Even though they appear, they are still ocean water, So there is no reason for the water of the waves to be worse than the water of the ocean. Just as there is no reason for the water of the ocean to be better than the water of the waves, Likewise, although various thoughts arise from the force of habit when the mind abides in non-thought, Since mind-essence appears as thought, There is no reason for thought itself to be worse than non-thought, Since mind appears as thought, There is no reason for non-thought to be better than thought, If you understand how to look at thoughts, they will appear as non-thought.
