The Four-Letter Instructions of Mahamudra The Four-Letter Instructions of Mahamudra The Four-Letter Instructions of Mahamudra, Homage! Homage to the venerable gurus! These oral instructions of the perfectly complete Buddha, the Great Vajradhara, are the Four-Letter Mahamudra, which has two meanings: explaining the lineage of the venerable gurus, and the actual instructions that arise from that lineage. The first is: The perfectly complete Buddha, the Great Vajradhara, spoke to the great Bodhisattva Vajragarbha, who compiled the teachings of the ten bhumis. He transmitted it to Tailopa Sherab Zangpo, he transmitted it to the scholar Naropa Panchen, he transmitted it to the translator Marpa Lotsawa, he transmitted it to the powerful Milarepa, he transmitted it to Dakpo Moonlight Youth, he transmitted it to the Sugata Phagmo Drupa, he transmitted it to the Siddha Lingje Repa, he transmitted it to Drogön Tsangpa Gyare, he transmitted it to Götsangpa Gonpo Dorje, he transmitted it to Yangön Chökyi Gyalpo, he transmitted it to the heart-son Chennga Rinden, he transmitted it to Künchen Zurphuk Chöje, he transmitted it to the hermit Ritro Rechen, he transmitted it to Mengom Özer Senge, he transmitted it to Lachiwa Namkha Gyaltsen, he transmitted it to the Vinaya holder Ngagi Wangpo, he transmitted it to Taklung Thangpa Ngag Wang Drakpa, he transmitted it to Nyamme Shar Rabjampa Sangye Senge, he transmitted it to Jetsun Ruspai Gyanchen, he transmitted it to Nyamme Götsang Repa, he transmitted it to me. Therefore, when guiding, it is very important to first practice guru yoga. The second part, the actual instructions that arise from that lineage, are called the Four-Letter Mahamudra, but in reality, there are four words: First, cutting the root of the mind; second, showing how to settle the mind; third, cutting off the wrong paths of the mind; fourth, showing how to take the path of the mind. First, cutting the root of the mind is: Examining this mind-nature, from where does it first arise? Where does it dwell in the middle? Where does it go in the end? The result is: Initially, there is no place of arising, because it is not produced from cause and condition, so it is inherently rootless. In the middle, there is no place of dwelling, because it is not formed into shape and color, so movement is empty movement, and appearance is empty appearance. In the end, there is no place to go, because it has no place or trace of going anywhere, so movement is self-liberated, and appearance is self-purified. Therefore, this mind-nature is not initially produced by cause, so in the end, it is condition.

It is indestructible. Because there are no sudden occurrences, there is no emptiness or increase and decrease. Because it pervades all appearances and existence, there is no partiality or limitation. Because it is not composed of things and characteristics, it cannot be indicated by "this." Because it is not formed in any place, yet it appears as anything, it transcends the extremes of existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation. Because the three times do not change, and its nature is pure from the beginning, it is not tainted by the faults of samsara, therefore this very nature of mind is Buddha from the beginning, so it is said. Second, the method of placing the mind is shown: On the basis of such realization, there are six methods for making the mind abide where it does not abide. The body is placed in the seven-point posture of Vairochana, and the mind, like a great garuda soaring in the sky, is placed naturally, without fabrication, without mental effort, without doing anything. Like the ocean without waves, the nature of mind is placed without any movement. Like the sun and moon without clouds, it is placed in a state of all-illuminating radiance. Like a child looking at a temple, it is placed without obstructing clarity and without grasping. Like the waves of water, all arising sensations are known as mind, and then it is placed. Like a bird flying in the sky, awareness is placed without trace. Third, there are five ways to cut off the wrong paths of the mind: Hoping for the Buddha above is a wrong path, so be certain that there is no better Buddha other than your own mind and your own awareness. Doubting samsara below is a wrong path, so be certain that there is no worse samsara other than your own mind and your own ignorance. Attachment to appearances in between is a wrong path, so be certain that all appearances are dreams and illusions. Attachment to inner experiences is a wrong path, so be certain that Mahamudra is without mental fabrication. If you despise the law of cause and effect, it is a wrong path, so be certain that as long as samsara is not empty, the law of cause and effect will not deceive you. Abandon even the smallest sins and practice even the smallest virtues. Fourth, the method of carrying the mind is shown: There are six yogas of continuous practice: the yoga of increasing appearances during the day, the yoga of taking desirable objects as companions in the evening, the yoga of gathering the senses into the base at night, the yoga of placing awareness in the vase at midnight, the yoga of clarifying awareness at dawn, and the yoga of completely releasing wisdom at the time of death. The yoga of increasing appearances during the day is:
