Eighteenth, The Chapter on Establishing the Nature of Reality. Eighteenth, The Chapter on Establishing the Nature of Reality. When the objects of thought are thus fully completed, wisdom arising from meditation should be generated in the mind. Among the three paths that lead to definite emergence from the three vehicles, here one engages in the meaning of the supreme essence. Among these, first, it is crucial to know the nature of reality. Although there are many aspects due to the power of the vehicles, the definitive essence, the truth, is without distinction; it is the secret treasury of all the Buddhas. Its nature is clear light wisdom, primordially peaceful, without elaboration, self. Like the sun and space, spontaneously accomplished, unconditioned. Since it is naturally pure and has always existed in the great state, appearance and emptiness are inseparable, without establishment or destruction, without coming or going. Conventional truth is the cessation of all concepts, transcending the realm of distinctions, therefore it transcends the two truths that are examined, and all elaborations are pacified. Truth is without distinction, without establishment or non-establishment. In the expanse, appearance and emptiness are of one nature, therefore that truth is also said to be without distinction. If the two truths of terminology are well distinguished, then all the phenomena of samsara, which appear as illusions, are conventional truths because they are untrue and deceptive. The profound, peaceful, and luminous Dharma of Nirvana is considered the ultimate truth, the unchanging nature. This manifold appearance of conventional truth is like illusion, a water moon, an emanation, or a reflection. Whatever appears without inherent existence, if examined closely, has no real basis, and is empty like space, with characteristics that are cut off. If not examined, it is like a variety of delightful illusions. It arises from the interdependent conditions of habitual confusion, like the appearance of a Datura. Thus, since it is empty in nature and without self, that itself is its reality. What is called ultimate is the conventional aspect of appearance, and since there is no establishment of arising, etc., at the time of appearance, the nature itself is that, and the truths are inseparable. Its nature is pure from the beginning, and since clear light and ultimate truth cannot be made into two, samsara and nirvana are non-dual, and the truths are inseparable. Thus, although it appears, samsara is not established, so it is without inherent existence, and is the ultimate truth of the expanse. Since there is no Dharma that can be distinguished as separate entities, it is taught that samsara and nirvana are inseparable, and are of equal nature. Other than this, a mind with wrong conceptions is extremely ignorant of the meaning of reality. In the face of delusion, there is cause and effect as it appears.

In short, cherish understanding the acceptance and rejection of virtue and non-virtue. The unchanging nature of the ultimate truth, Is the spontaneously arisen, luminous Sugata-garbha, The indivisible Dharma-nature of empty-clear awareness! This itself is the spontaneously arisen mandala of intrinsic nature, Originally endowed with the heart essence of spontaneous perfection and enlightenment, Completely pure, free from elaboration, and devoid of all partiality, Profoundly peaceful, the Dharmakaya and wisdom are inseparable. This is an analogy for what all beings possess, Like a treasure underground, a lamp inside a vase, And a Buddha image inside a lotus, the wise should understand. Just as a poor person has a precious treasure underground, But remains impoverished because they do not know it exists, Although the spontaneously arisen Buddha exists within, The eight consciousnesses, namely body, speech, and mind, are obscured by earth, Constantly impoverished by the faults and poverty of existence. Therefore, when seen by someone with divine eyes, And taught the method to extract the treasure, it is extracted, Like the spontaneous wealth being fully abundant. When the holy ones teach this reality, By practicing accordingly, one finds the Buddha within oneself, Fulfilling both aims, it becomes a wish-fulfilling jewel. Just as the light of a lamp inside a vase is bright, But is obscured by the vase and not visible outside, Although the Dharmakaya of essence abides within, It is not fully visible because it is obscured by the vase of obscurations. Therefore, just as breaking the vase makes it visible, When the obscurations of the earth are removed, It becomes a lamp illuminating the world everywhere. Just as there is a Sugata image inside a lotus, But it is not visible outside because it is covered by the lotus, Likewise, obscured by the thousand petals of grasping and being grasped, One cannot see the self-luminous Lord of the Buddhas. When the petals open and become clear, When one is liberated from the petals of the illusion of grasping and being grasped, The three bodies of enlightenment will appear within oneself. Therefore, the ultimate luminosity of the Dharmadhatu, Please know that this is the reality that exists within oneself. This has many names, It is well known as the Dhatu because of the arising of Samsara and Nirvana, It is called the self-existing and spontaneously perfect because it has existed since the beginning, It is called the essence of the heart because it is obscured by impurities, Because it is the reality, it is called the ultimate truth, Because it is pure from the beginning, it is called luminous and immaculate, Dwelling apart from the two extremes, it is called the nature of the Middle Way, Because it transcends elaboration, it is called Prajnaparamita, Empty-clear, completely pure, the indivisible truth, And without change.
