Collection of Teachings by Ngawang Lodro Drakpa JNLD41 A Concise Commentary on 'Offering Praise to the Meaning of Vision' A Concise Commentary on 'Offering Praise to the Meaning of Vision' A Concise Commentary on 'Offering Praise to the Meaning of Vision' Here, I offer praise to the essence of the Sugata (a title for the Buddha, meaning 'one who has gone to bliss')—the ultimate reality of the true nature of the ground-state (the fundamental state of all phenomena). This is done by showing that the ground-state manifests all aspects, that its nature is a treasury of all qualities, that it is primordially free from defilements and is the essence of the Dharmakaya (the body of truth), and that it is the unchanging ultimate wisdom. The first of these is: 'The all-pervading space is all aspects.' This comes from the 'Inconceivable Secret Sutra,' which states: 'Peaceful wisdom is like this: for example, the sky pervades all visible forms. Similarly, the body of the Tathagata (another title for the Buddha, meaning 'one who has thus gone') pervades all sentient beings.' Just as the sky pervades all objects with form, the essence of the Sugata pervades and enters into the nature of the minds of all sentient beings. According to this meaning, the impure dharmas of samsara (cyclic existence) and the pure dharmas of nirvana (liberation) are without distinction, and the indivisible, all-encompassing pervader is the ultimate dharma-dhatu (the realm of reality) of the ground. Such a dharma-dhatu, according to the meaning of the 'Garland of Glory Sutra,' the 'Kalachakra Tantra,' and the 'Abridged Tantra,' is the ultimate nature that holds all aspects of the ultimate reality of all knowable objects, and it is also the basis for the appearance of all aspects of samsara and nirvana. The second is: 'The nature of mind is a treasury of all qualities.' This comes from the 'Tathagatagarbha Sutra,' which states: 'Sons of the lineage, similarly, beneath the mind of attachment of all sentient beings, which is like a house, there is the great treasure of the strength, fearlessness, unmixedness, and all the dharmas of the Buddha.' According to this meaning, the self-arisen, co-emergent wisdom—the naturally luminous nature of mind—the essence of the Sugata, pervades and abides in the nature of the minds of all sentient beings. In its nature, the ultimate qualities that are primordially complete: the power of knowing what is and is not the case, the power of knowing karma and its ripening, the power of knowing various aspirations, and the power of knowing various realms. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ten Powers (stobs): The power of knowing what is possible and impossible; the power of knowing the maturation of karma; the power of knowing various understandings; the power of knowing various realms; the power of knowing the superiority or inferiority of faculties; the power of knowing the path to all destinations; the power of knowing meditative absorptions, liberations, concentrations, and attainments; the power of knowing past lives; the power of knowing death and rebirth; the power of knowing the exhaustion of defilements. The Four Fearlessnesses (mi 'jigs pa): Fearlessness in vowing to have perfected self-realization; fearlessness in vowing to have abandoned self-interest; fearlessness in teaching the obstructing dharmas; fearlessness in teaching the path to liberation. The Eighteen Unshared Qualities (ma 'dres pa): No errors in bodily conduct, which is the unshared quality included in bodily conduct; no idle chatter in speech, which is the unshared quality included in speech; no loss of mindfulness; no lack of concentration; no discriminatory thoughts; no unexamined equanimity; these four are the unshared qualities included in mental conduct; the above six are included in conduct. No decline in aspiration; no decline in diligence; no decline in mindfulness; no decline in concentration; no decline in wisdom; no decline in liberation; these six are the unshared qualities included in realization. All bodily activities are preceded by wisdom and followed by wisdom, which is an unshared quality; all speech activities are preceded by wisdom and followed by wisdom, which is an unshared quality; all mental activities are preceded by wisdom and followed by wisdom; these three, included in activities, are unshared qualities. The wisdom that engages without obstruction in all knowable things of the past; the wisdom that engages without obstruction in all knowable things of the future; the wisdom that engages without obstruction in all knowable things of the present; these three are the unshared qualities included in wisdom. Such are the eighteen unshared qualities. Furthermore, there are the four vajras (rdo rje bzhi), the essence of the four bodies (sku bzhi), the universal lord who embodies all families, the all-pervading lord of the wheel, the supreme mind-hero who unites bliss and emptiness, the treasury of infinite qualities, truly the great expanse (klung chen po). Third, the phrase 'Inseparability, primordially liberated, Dharmakaya (chos kyi sku)' comes from the 'Glorious Garland Sutra' ('phags pa dpal phreng gi mdo), which states: 'The indivisible, inconceivable Buddha-dharmas, more numerous than the sands of the Ganges, are the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata (de bzhin gshegs pa).' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ོས་ཀྱི་
