It is crucial that when you encounter suffering such as illness, do not be discouraged, but rather concentrate all the suffering of sentient beings on this, and feel happy, thinking how wonderful it would be if only I could bear all these sufferings myself. Whatever happens, maintain a balanced attitude towards happiness and suffering. Furthermore, do not always differentiate between mental and physical fatigue, but rather adjust your mind with strong actions, abandon expectations of personal gain and fame, and strive to gain inner freedom. Also, abandon expectations of your own abilities and doubts about your own problems such as illness, and avoid arrogance. Do not harbor the harm of others deep in your heart, and do not think that reciting mantras and other virtuous deeds are for the purpose of averting illness and evil spirits, but rather think that they are for the benefit of all sentient beings, for the attainment of Buddhahood. Abandon resentment towards others, place your hopes solely on the Three Jewels, learn to cherish others more than yourself, and examine your own mind every day to see how virtuous and non-virtuous thoughts arise. If virtuous thoughts are many, rejoice; if there are sinful thoughts, confess and vow from the bottom of your heart every day. When you recognize that afflictions have arisen in your mind, immediately forcibly stop them, or choose whatever is comfortable for you, and contemplate the clear light of emptiness in its natural state. Furthermore, constantly do whatever virtuous deeds you can accomplish through the three doors of body, speech, and mind without relying on others, and keep the next life more important than this life in mind, and act accordingly no matter what. It is important to always maintain this firm conviction without slackening. As it is said: Having purified all the stains of the mind, The method for realizing the ultimate meaning of reality. This is a concise and condensed instruction, May it also bring benefit and auspiciousness! This is offered by Ngawang Lodrö Drakpa for the purpose of clarifying his own thoughts to the diligent practitioner Lama Kunsang, entitled 'Mind Training Meditation: Nectar Essence for Purifying the Stains of the Mind.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
