Enter (the topic). Sudden stains, like an ocean of evil views, Reside like a sheath covering it. The self-luminous essence of the Sugata (Tathāgatagarbha), Abides like pure water in the center of the earth. Sudden stains, like an ocean of darkness, Reside like turbidity obscuring it. If you do not understand the supreme Dharma of such distinction, It is like taking poison for medicine, or copper for gold. The sudden mind and mental events (Citta-caitta) of delusion, If clung to as body and wisdom, will ruin oneself and others. If you know the nature of mind, it is Buddhahood; If you do not know, it is said to be the cause of Samsara. These contradict the Buddha's teachings, And should be recognized as thieves of the Dharma. Those dark ones of desire and evil views, For example, fire, if known, is cool, If unknown, one desires heat. Similarly, for example, the nature of mind is Dharmakaya, Poison, if known, is nectar; if unknown, Is poison. A cliff, if known, is a great plain, If unknown, it is a cliff. A razor, If known, does not cut; if unknown, it cuts. Thus, for example, a child, Smears ink and calls it a white bird. Similarly, consciousness (Vijñāna) does not transform into white Dharma (Śukladharma), Ignorant evil views confuse this. In glorious Shambhala (Śambhala) without evil views, Many beings who know the nature of mind reside. In the land of Tibet, only I. Child, you should enter the true Dharma. It is not enough to merely enter, If you want to be liberated from the sheath of sudden stains, Then you must meditate without distraction on the profound path of liberation—Vajrayoga. This letter sent to you, the fortunate one, Is the special instruction of glorious Shambhala, It is the heart speech of the three-family protectors (Avalokiteśvara, Mañjuśrī, Vajrapāṇi). Except for you, it is not to be given to others. Why is that? Because the profound Dharma of Other-Emptiness (Śūnyatā), Is little known in the land of Tibet. Especially those of low intelligence, little learning, and holding wrong views, Will generate slander upon hearing it. Therefore, secrecy is crucial, there is a seal. The letter is covered with a protective amulet. Two of the yellow flat hats that I wear, Are offered as symbols of bringing you auspiciousness. May this virtue, the multitude of sudden stains, Together with life, impurities, veins, and blood, Relying on the profound means that can destroy, Quickly attain the supreme essence of the Sugata (Tathāgatagarbha). May it be auspicious! Table of Contents A letter written by one possessing the four reliances. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
