Collected Works of Lotsawa Lode Sherpa JLP9 'Mirror Illuminating the Two Truths' by Lotsawa 'Mirror Illuminating the Two Truths' by Lotsawa First, General Introduction Om Svasti! The well-spoken sacred Dharma, exquisitely passes into Nirvana, supremely excellent. The fruit of practice is wonderfully amazing. I take refuge in the feet of the incomparable teacher. The Lotsawa (translator), who has trained his mind's eye through extensive learning, sees the meaning of the mind and draws the picture of the Dharma. If you are fascinated by the profound form of the two truths, hold the mirror of faith and look carefully. All dharmas are like dreams, illusions, echoes, cataracts, shadows, moon in water, reflections, bubbles, lightning, rainbows, magical illusions, and cities of gandharvas, as the Victorious One has said. Conventional appearances are like this and that, delightful without investigation, but causing aversion after investigation. Who would regard deceptive dharmas as true? Meditate on emptiness, the essence like that of a banana tree. Ultimate appearances are like this and that, appearing in various ways, yet an indestructible vajra body. Who would regard true dharmas as false? Meditate on the vast array of appearances, luminous emptiness. This is the general introduction. Second, Conventional Truth Although that is so, first, regarding how to take conventional appearances as the path, there is a clear explanation. For the sake of devoted students who seek meaning, I will explain as it is said in the sutras. Even if experienced, it is not truly established, because it arises from the causes of habits and delusions. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like dreams. If investigated, meditate on the state of emptiness without truth. Although appearing as many things such as enemies and friends, they are deceptive due to the assembly of conditions. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like illusions. If investigated, meditate on the state of emptiness without truth. Although it is merely the sound of speech, unable to grasp its essence, the words entice children. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like echoes. If investigated, meditate on the state of emptiness without truth. Although various forms appear, they are grasped as true objects of delusion. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like cataracts. If investigated, meditate on the state of emptiness without truth. Although it does not go beyond false illusory appearances, it temporarily follows like ripening fruit. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like shadows. If investigated, meditate on the state of emptiness without truth. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The way of contemplation: Though manifold appearances arise due to conditions, their essence originates from one's own mind. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like the moon in water. Upon examination, contemplate the state of emptiness devoid of inherent existence. Though habitual tendencies are accumulated from the same alaya consciousness, virtuous and non-virtuous results manifest separately. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like reflections in a mirror. Upon examination, contemplate the state of emptiness devoid of inherent existence. Though relatives and enjoyments gather in abundance, they are fearful and tasteless without conditions. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like bubbles in water. Upon examination, contemplate the state of emptiness devoid of inherent existence. Though the splendor of prosperity shines brightly for a moment, it is immediately covered by the darkness of decline. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like lightning. Upon examination, contemplate the state of emptiness devoid of inherent existence. Though all conditioned phenomena do not remain stable, the clear appearances of the five desirable qualities arise. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like a rainbow. Upon examination, contemplate the state of emptiness devoid of inherent existence. Even the karma accumulated by one individual can create various manifestations of high and low, happiness and suffering. Therefore, conventional appearances are said to be like magical illusions. Upon examination, contemplate the state of emptiness devoid of inherent existence. Though dependent arising lacks inherent existence, various appearances arise without obstruction. Therefore, the appearance of karma is said to be like a city of gandharvas (celestial musicians). Upon examination, contemplate the state of emptiness devoid of inherent existence. Having examined thus, realize that phenomena are not truly established, yet in conventional truth, dependent arising is unfailing. Therefore, do not diminish the results of actions of body, speech, and mind. The wise should act with mindfulness. Possessing the view of understanding emptiness through dependent arising, cultivate and expand virtuous actions in whatever arises. For the yogi who knows appearances to be illusory, this is the way to practice. It is said that the view of realizing the emptiness of the aggregates of fear completely uproots all wrong views. Also, with the correct view of unfailing karma and its results, one prevents falling into lower realms and attains higher realms. This is the wisdom regarding conventional truth, the second part. Part Three: The Section on Ultimate Truth. Then, again, using the previous examples, I will explain the profound teachings on how to transform the appearance of ultimate clear light into the path. May those who diligently practice increase their joy. Though known individually, it is not found elsewhere, for it arises from the power of the yogi's familiarity. Therefore, ultimate clear light is said to be like a dream. Contemplate the state of unchanging mahamudra (great seal). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
