Concerning the Questions to Gyalwa Rangjung Dorje Verses of Questions before Chökyi Je Pal Rangjung Dorje. Homage to the Lama Manjushri! Whose toenails are red like the sun, Adorned and blazing with a net of a thousand rays, Whoever smiles on the crown of the supreme beings, Today I bow with a lotus grove of my mind in motion. Whatever is heard brings an end to samsara, A path that leads beings to the realm of peace, A Dharma of cool bliss, free from turbidity, uncompounded. Please listen to this meaning of Rangjung Gyalpo. Here, whatever cuts off doubts of the mind, The profound, peaceful, great bliss, spontaneously accomplished Vajra mind, There is no other than the all-knowing union. Therefore, please grant this request that I have made. What is the first Buddha? If it is the nature of mind, then for all beings, Since it exists, the nature of mind has no beginning or end. How can there be a first in that? However, if there is another Buddha, Have the two accumulations been completed before or not? If they have been completed, the teacher of the two accumulations, If there is, then that very first is contradictory. If there is not, then the rememberer of self-nature, Who is that primordial person? If the two accumulations have not been completed before, It is not the nature of mind, the accumulations have not been gathered. Such a Buddha is amazing! In the sutras and tantras, for all beings, The marks and examples of the Victorious One, rays of light, etc., Shown by the example of a great silk cloth, Is it actually there or not? If it is not there, then for sentient beings at the base time, Since it is not there, then at the time of the result, Even if you practice, it is not possible to become a Buddha. Since there is no pure cause, there is no pure result. It is not possible to become a Buddha. If it is actually there, then it is permanent and solid, Like a self, it changes and even without effort, Why is it not possible to attain Buddhahood? If you say it is obscured by impurities, then In the Dharma body that is pure from the beginning, Who is suitable to obscure and who is suitable to be obscured? If that very nature of mind is such, If it does not become obscured by impurities, What harm does it do to others to be obscured by impurities? Even in the Lankavatara Sutra, If it is actually there, it is said to be like a self. Furthermore, that Sugata essence, When it is free from impurities, it becomes apparent. If you say it exists from the base time itself, For the beings who go to Vajrasana (Bodh Gaya), The Vajrasana and its path, It is the same as saying that it exists in the mind from the beginning. The result exists in the cause

Becomes a fault. All beings, such as peaceful and wrathful ones, the mandala of self-arisen nature, ultimately, does it exist or not? If it doesn't exist, it is stated in the Sutras and Tantras, some see the mandala that is accomplished through practice, that is not a proper analogy. If it exists, is it in the body or in the mind? If it is in the body, at the time of death, the mandala deities perish like the body. If it is in the mind, the mind has no beginning or end, how are the deities' abodes and the deities they rely on accomplished? Samsara and Nirvana are established simultaneously, one before the other. If it is said that Samsara exists first, then from where did the first Samsara come? If it is said that it comes from ignorance, then from where did ignorance come? If it is said that it comes from the nature of mind, the nature of mind is unborn and without substance, then the arising of causes and conditions, which are substantial, becomes like the arising of substance from non-substance. Or, if it is said that Samsara arises from something other than ignorance, then it is truly strange, an unprecedented joke. If it is said that Nirvana exists first, then beings would walk the path without practice, what kind of Nirvana would that be? By whom is Samadhi accomplished? If there is no object to be accomplished and no accomplisher, and Samsara and Nirvana are different from the beginning, then Samsara is permanent, not the path to Buddhahood, and the path to Nirvana becomes meaningless. Furthermore, if peace precedes Samsara, then for the Buddhas initially, the demonstration of practicing the path, good and evil, etc., everything would not change, everything would exist simultaneously. Like a blind person cannot guide a blind person. Are these delusions with cause or without cause? If with cause, then does the initial cause of delusion have a cause or not? If it has a cause, it contradicts the initial cause of delusion. If it is without cause, there is no cause for delusion without cause. If one does not accept the initial delusion, then the current delusion will not change. Or, if there is no cause for delusion, then from where do these various delusions arise? Are phenomena and the nature of phenomena one or different? If they are different, how is the initial nature of phenomena? The nature of phenomena would become various delusions. If they are different, the nature of phenomena is the self-nature of phenomena, how does such a change arise in different phenomena and the nature of phenomena? If they are two, then both faults exist as before. Or, if it is neither one nor different, if it is not the true meaning, then phenomena and the nature of phenomena cannot be separately established. The obscurations of ignorance, etc., that cause beings to wander in Samsara, upon what do they rely, and how do they obscure? The nature of mind.
