The "Essence of Cause" exists in the form of a garland of flowers. (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari:, Sanskrit Romanization:, Literal Chinese meaning:) May there be auspiciousness and perfection! A body as pleasing as a blooming lotus, worshipped by the all-knowing gods and humans, Glorious Samye Monastery amidst the snowy mountains! May wise individuals listen to these words. Nowadays, some say to me, "You don't understand conforming to the world, you have no wealth, you are narrow-minded, you cannot be alone, yet you call yourself a 'Nature' master." To all these statements, please listen to my answers one by one. That which is despised by the holy, non-Dharma, sinful actions increase, deceit and fraud, the root of deceiving others, regretting at the time of death, the cause of falling into evil realms in the next life. Even without this conforming to the world, it is good. The noose of samsara, desires, are despised by the holy, contending with everyone, the root of many sufferings. Even if one has wealth, one is not content, greed increases, it is the cause of falling into evil realms, even if one is poor, it is good. If worldly people do not develop renunciation towards the Dharma, then they will never be liberated from the ocean of samsara. Towards impermanent and meaningless phenomena, not being attached, being narrow-minded is good. When staying alone, attachment and aversion naturally increase, distraction, noise, and trivial matters especially increase, it is the cause of being bound by the noose of self-grasping and greed. Such a place, even without certainty, is good. This manifestation of "Nature" is not without cause, day and night I have been thinking carefully, the ocean of samsara, full of the waves of birth and death, the delusion of self-grasping, I wander in this, difficult to liberate, seeing the depths of the ocean of samsara, shedding tears of disappointment, this "Nature" manifests. By observing the actions of others, please listen to how this "Nature" of mine manifests. Clearly promising to be a Khenpo, Acharya, and Lama worthy of offerings, yet not practicing the Dharma, only pursuing desires and noise. Outwardly appearing peaceful, but inwardly full of arrogance. Seeing hypocrisy and pretense, this "Nature" manifests. Those with Dharma also value those with wealth, even the honest favor deceitful retinues. Those who pursue the eight worldly dharmas are those who pretend to be Dharma practitioners, seeing the false image of the Lama, this "Nature" manifests. Those who do not understand the meaning, who sow discord and slander, those who are not honest, who are flattering, unhappy when others are well, separating close friends from each other. Seeing such friends, this "Nature" manifests. Unable to endure oneself, yet able to oppress others.

Unfavorable time and place, harboring evil thoughts and favoring others, Showing various displeased expressions at the slightest dissatisfaction, Seeing such friends is truly annoying. Teaching without order will lead to harsh words, Unbelieving, disrespectful, stubborn like wood and stone, Greedy for food and evading diligent labor, Seeing such students is truly annoying. Praising to the face but speaking ill behind the back, Not practicing Dharma but chasing after worldly pleasures, Returning kindness with enmity after receiving favors, Seeing such students is truly annoying. If food and clothing are meager, even the learned are despised, If wealthy, even the foolish are respected, Associating with the deceitful but being regarded as heroes, Seeing such people is truly annoying. Being upright is seen as a great disadvantage, Being poor is considered lacking merit, Having Dharma is said to be useless and destitute, Seeing such people is truly annoying. Those who agree with everything are considered good Geshes (spiritual mentors), The hypocritical and deceitful are praised as monks, The harsh-tongued, foolish, and deceitful are considered good people, Seeing such people is truly annoying. Mouth promises and giving a little, then dedicating it as merit, Even harmful and hurtful giving is boasted as virtuous deeds, Doing unlawful things but hoping to attain good realms, This inverted view is truly annoying. Having no Dharma but being slightly wealthy is considered happiness, Seeing those who uphold vows strictly but are poor, everyone despises them, An era when the foolish are more popular than the saints, If there is any conscience left, one should detest these things. In this day and age, views are inverted and confused, One's own faults and shortcomings are regarded as virtues, Like a dwarf laughing at people with two legs, saying they have one leg too many. For those who are eloquent writers and speakers, And those who are skilled in debate, In this era, those who practice Dharma accordingly are despised. When these words are spoken, those dissolute, ignorant, and foolish, Are extremely ignorant of the principles of listening, contemplation, and meditation and the tenets of sects, Those foolish ones who regard the three jewels of the three trainings (ethics, concentration, and wisdom) as inferior, Even if those who like to associate with new nobles are not pleased, For the sake of making those with good ethics, healthy body and mind, and complete three trainings, Those who are upright like city walls and have good wisdom feel happy, I have written these. Please all wise ones discern truth from falsehood, These words are from a poet in the land of snow.
