The Essence of Practical Instructions. The so-called "Essence of Practical Instructions." Homage to glorious Vajrasattva! The three bodies are spontaneously accomplished, and the activity radiates a million lights. I bow to the feet of the lineage lamas of the three stages. To take the meaning of the clear light of thigle into experience. I write the profound oral instructions of the Essence of Practical Instructions. There are three here: Establish the foundation by determining the key points of the body. Find the path by determining the key points of the prana. Manifest it by determining the key points of awareness. The first has the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, Nirmanakaya, and the view of non-separation, four in all. The Dharmakaya is like a lion. The body sits in a stretched posture. . Join the two fingers of the hands and place them on the left and right chest areas. Place the elbows on the neck and look at the sky. The Sambhogakaya is like an elephant. Close the mouth and join the knees to the chest. Place the elbows of the hands on the ground. Cover the palms over the throat. The Nirmanakaya is like a sage. Join the knees to the chest. Sit in a squatting position with the elbows crossed on top of the knees. Non-separation is like a vajra. Vajra full lotus posture, complete enlightenment. As it says, legs in full lotus posture. Hands in equipoise. . Straighten the spine like stacked cave peaks. Slightly raise the neck and align it with the spine, thereby establishing the central channel. This binds thoughts to self-stop and prana to self-purify. These four key points of the body should be practiced with joy, and practiced in the great foundation of the vajra posture. Second, clarifying the path by determining the key points of the prana, there are four: exhaling, holding, drawing in, and retaining. First, exhaling is to slowly allow the breath to go out as far as it can. Holding is to not let the breath that has gone out for a moment go back in, but to hold it in that state as long as possible. Drawing in is to then slowly inhale. Retaining is to let it stay inside naturally for as long as it stays. The horse of the mind is prana, so when you seize the prana, you seize the mind. Since the prana is actually seized outwards, the fact that it is forcefully seized inwards is a wonderful key point. It is also important to cherish slowness, as all deliberate efforts become obstacles, while natural movement without effort is unlikely to cause obstacles. Just as there are no obstacles in ordinary natural movement. Having qualities arises from knowing the key point of slowness. Also, in the key point of cultivating awareness, it is said that only prana is important.

This is because all the increase and decrease of appearances depend on the wind. When the wind is first controlled, the clear light of appearances increases. When the wind is finally purified and exhausted, the clear light is separated from the horse that moves outward, and it dissolves inward and is exhausted. This point is very important, and wise people should understand it. In particular, when strong afflictions arise, or when one is displeased and grinds one's teeth, expelling it outward with a "ha" sound leads to self-destruction. When good thoughts such as faith and samadhi arise, keeping them inward leads to accomplishment and increase, this is the key instruction. Third, to manifest by ascertaining the key points of awareness, there are three: the key point of the door, the key point of the object, and the key point of awareness. Among these, the key point of the door has three ways of looking: the Shravaka (Hinayana) looks downward in peace, the Bodhisattva (Mahayana) looks straight ahead, and the Tathagata (Buddha) looks upward. In these, it is very important to let the eyes relax naturally and slowly without effort. If the eyes are strained too much, the eyes will hurt, tears will flow, and the condition of the eyes will worsen, making one unwilling to look. Looking slowly with natural relaxation, appearances will increase and one will be liberated from faults. The key point of the object is to look at the center of the sky free from clouds. The key point of space is to focus only on one place without changing, this is very important. If one looks there for a while and then looks here, there will be no place for appearances to arise. Therefore, focusing on one place is key. The key point of awareness is to guide it from the eyes alone to the end of clarity without letting it stray to other doors, and to fix one's gaze unwaveringly on the center of the sky. No matter how memories and thoughts disappear, do not deviate from one place, just like a sparrow staying on a wooden board, seize one's own position. First, a bright white light and flashes will appear, and then five-colored lights and bindus will appear. When the eyes are fixed on them, the outer appearance is clear as light, the inner is clear and bright, and the middle is without attachment, these three appear at the same time. The outer clear light of appearances is the skillful means of the generation stage, the inner clear light of emptiness is the wisdom of the completion stage, and awareness seizes its own position in the nature of the Dharmakaya. At this time, awareness abides in its own nature, just as a king does not leave his throne. The wind becomes gentle, and there are no scattered thoughts, just as ministers are imprisoned. The five sense doors do not scatter outward, and clear light appears in the sky, just as the people are all subdued.
