O! Second, the essence of meditation is: to abide in the natural state without any modification or fabrication, like an archer who is skilled in the three essentials. Among them, the essential of the body is the seven dharmas of Vairochana; the essential of speech is not speaking, and the breath is extremely slow; the essential of mind is to let ordinary awareness relax naturally. In addition, there are seven natural states: understanding the natural state; abiding in the natural state, directly cutting through; benefiting the mind, being grasped by mindfulness; not being shaken by thoughts; manifesting. If these essentials are not possessed, there will be seven faults: if the natural state is not understood, it will not be possible to distinguish between error and obstacle; if one does not abide in the natural state, awareness will be lost to external conditions; if one does not directly cut through, one will follow after thoughts; if one does not benefit the mind, one will become an ordinary person; if one is not grasped by mindfulness, the five poisons and three poisons will arise; if one is shaken by thoughts, afflictions will arise naturally; if one does not manifest, one will be scattered and dull. When the seven essentials are possessed, one should examine whether one has confidence in understanding the natural state; one should examine whether there is benefit or harm in abiding in the natural state; one should examine whether one falls into the three poisons in directly cutting through; one should examine whether the foundation is stable in benefiting the mind; one should examine whether one can naturally liberate when grasped by mindfulness; one should examine whether clarity arises when not shaken by thoughts; one should examine whether there is a master present when manifesting, and then accept or reject. In short, the essence of meditation can be summarized into three ways of abiding: awareness has no support, abiding clearly like a cloud in the sky; because the activity of breath and mind has ceased, awareness abides in its nature, abiding like a self-grinding mill when the water has stopped; because one knows that mind is inherently liberated, one abides like an enlightened being who has transcended hope and fear. Even if one realizes inherent liberation in view, if one does not abide in the natural state in practice, the illusion of samsara will not disappear. Therefore, it is essential to familiarize awareness with its nature. Third, the essence of conduct is: to abide in a state of non-acceptance and non-rejection. In the state of meditative equipoise, conduct is the natural expression of the six senses, without attaching to any appearance. In the state of post-meditation, conduct is self-liberation upon encounter, self-arising without bias, like a snake's knot. In summary, there are three: the appearance of form is liberated as unreal, like the moon in water; the appearance of sound is liberated as emptiness, like the echo in an empty valley; thoughts and concepts are liberated without trace, like water and waves.

Like waves. In short, by practicing with the understanding that whatever appears is without inherent existence, thereby freeing oneself from the constraints of affirmation and negation, is the key instruction for the collapse of dualistic grasping in its own place. One should train in the complete liberation from all contact. Fourth, the nature of the result is the dharmakaya of luminosity and emptiness. Believe that it is primordially liberated, so there is no need to liberate it again now. Be certain that it is self-liberated, so there is no need to rely on other antidotes. Be confident that it is spontaneously liberated, so there is no need to add anything on top of liberation. In the state of pristine awareness, emptiness without trace, determine that it is primordially the Great Perfection. Abide naturally, free from artificiality, hope, and doubt. Relax into the ease of dharmata, and recognize the original, primordial state. Now, recognize the awareness of the present as the great natural state. Relax naturally without effort, practice, correction, or fabrication. To be confident in the great natural state of the dharmakaya is the result of the great, natural, spontaneous perfection. In short, having decided that one's own mind is the Buddha, abide in self-awareness, free from hope, doubt, correction, and fabrication. In the awareness where action, effort, and practice are dissolved, relax into the great, original, self-liberated state, which is the nature of the Great Perfection. One should train in the yoga of the continuous stream of effortless activity. Thus, the meaning of mind itself being like the sky, by showing primordial liberation as being like the sky, may all beings see the meaning of dualistic purity, and may they attain the stainless dharmakaya of the Victorious Ones. This text on effortless, natural liberation was composed by the yogi of the Great Perfection, Longchen Rabjam Zangpo. May fortunate heart-sons rejoice! From the essential instructions of the Secret Essence, this is the practice text called "Transforming Impermanence into the Path: A Cloud Mass in the Sky," completed by the supreme vehicle yogi Longchen Rabjam at Gangri Todkar (White Skull Snow Mountain). Good! Good! Good! From the Ancestral Heritage, the Collected Works of Longchen Rabjam, Volume 10, Thought-Free Cloud Mass in the Sky.
