A description of the characteristics of the bardo and an explanation of the causes of the places of rebirth. Even though those of the lowest faculty see the door of this Dharma, if they are not familiar with it and have not broken their vows, they will exhale their breath in the five pure lands of the Sambhogakaya and later be liberated without a bardo. However, those of the very lowest faculty will wander in the Sipa Bardo and have to take rebirth. There are two explanations for this: ordinary people and those who hold to philosophical tenets. First, when one faints after breathing one's last, and then arises from that state, one is not familiar with the arising of the self-appearances of the three kayas, so one does not recognize them. Frightened by the three sounds, lights, and rays, the consciousness arises as a mental body, complete with all faculties, and capable of unimpeded movement. At that time, from the essence of the three inner poisons, three terrifying abysses arise outwardly: from attachment, a red, vivid abyss; from hatred, a white, stark abyss; and from ignorance, a black, dark abyss. One falls into such abysses and experiences the suffering of the fear of falling. From the essence of the four elements, four terrifying sounds arise: from earth and wind, the fear of collapsing ravines and caves; from water and wind, being caught in the waves of a raging ocean; from fire and wind, being caught in the midst of a great forest fire; and from the wind of wind, the fear of being caught in a whirlwind. At that time, the gods born together with the essence of virtue act as protectors and helpers, while the demons born together with the essence of sin inflict harm and create obstacles, resulting in two undesirable outcomes: they pull one back and forth on the path to higher and lower realms. They calculate merits and demerits and even accomplish things through lies. At that time, due to the perversion of self-appearance, one sees the form of Yama, the Lord of Dharma: the large one is equal to the edge of the sky; the medium one is the size of Mount Meru; with crystal eyes in his eyes; hair tied in a topknot; a large belly; a thin neck; holding a skull staff and a mirror of karma in his hands; uttering sounds of "kill" and "chop" from his mouth; surrounded by the retinue of the Yama of Karma, binding with lassos, drinking brains, separating heads and bodies, and extracting hearts—from where do such things come to fill the world? There, the demons born together add up the sins committed.

The black stones are cast down; the merits done by the gods are cast down as white stones. At that time, trembling with extreme fear and dread, and lying that I have not committed sins, Yama says: Look at the mirror of my karma! Having said that, everything that is shown appears clearly, and virtuous beings are led upwards by the gods. Furthermore, whatever supports of body, speech, and mind are accomplished with virtuous intention, such as the eight great stupas, bridges, wells, or places of rest, all appear as places of refuge. Sinful beings are bound by Yama's noose and dragged downwards, beaten, heads cut off, hearts extracted, intestines eaten, driven by fierce wild animals, hail, and blizzards, experiencing great suffering. In the dark realm of darkness, without protectors, saviors, or friends, there is great suffering. In the bardo of existence, awareness is seven times clearer than now, and one can see everything, but those who are not of the same kind and gods without clairvoyance cannot see. Awareness, like a feather without support carried by the wind, rides on the horse of breath, and awareness wavers and floats. Tormented by the body, one thinks, 'How wonderful it would be to obtain a body!' and then one enters into all the earth, stones, mountains, and rocks. Relatives are met only in dreams, and to all who weep, one says, 'Do not weep, I am here.' It is said in all the sutras and tantras that there is a strong feeling of suffering. One experiences death every seven weeks. At that time, if the survivors strive to perform virtuous deeds, then by that merit, those who have changed their sectarian beliefs will have their virtuous power increased, and the path of Vajrasattva's inner space will dawn, and there are also those who are liberated from here. For ordinary individuals, it can also be averted by pure rituals. In the 'Union of Sun and Moon' it says: 'After that one dies, for a number of days, even up to twenty-one, one should strive to perform rituals on the seventh day, and at that time, the path will also be shown.' After that, the mental body of the bardo becomes very weary, and the consciousness is driven by wind and karmic imprints. Without any control, when the gandharva seeks the door of the womb, the manner in which the place of birth and the appearance of the mother's womb appear is as follows: In the tantra of 'Great Place Prophecy' it says: 'Appearing as a cow, a lake, and a swan, and the form of a horse, wanting to enter therein, hearing unpleasant sounds, in order from east to west, the pleasant and delightful palace of Jambudvipa, the forest of the Asuras.'
