A Song of Advice to Oneself. A Song of Advice to Oneself. Hey! Tshewang Norbu, who is named as a reincarnation! You lazy and negligent one, come here and listen. There are many who teach Dharma to you here, but few who teach the good path to eternal happiness. In this degenerate age, there are few teachers like me. Therefore, do not be distracted, hold on to these words of advice. This is not like always telling jokes. What is there to say to a person without heart or liver? Alas! This body of leisure and fortune is the result of past accumulations. Not knowing how difficult it is to obtain, it is like a child finding a treasure. Even though the generation of pure recollection is without deceit and the habitual tendencies are weak, if one does not act according to the Dharma, it is like a jewel sinking into the mud. Even if good karma ripens and one is interested in the Dharma, but if one does not hit the point, it is like a poor woman's golden pot. Even if one meets a qualified guru with good aspirations, but if one does not know how to pray, it is like a black bee entering a lotus grove. Even if one knows a little about faith and pure appearance, but if the foundation is not stable, it is like planting seeds in barren land. Even if one receives the kindness, instructions, and transmissions of the holy ones, but if one does not understand them as they are, it is like watching from afar. Even if one hears many profound, beautiful, and pleasing teachings, but if they do not benefit oneself, it is like throwing water against a rock. Even if one understands a little about cause and effect and vows, but if they do not enter one's heart, it is like a stiff leather bag filled with oil. Even if one relies on a qualified guru for a long time, but if one does not understand like the Dharma, it is like a Mongolian in a monastery. When one meets the supreme guru and receives the sacred Dharma, if one does not exert effort, it is like returning empty-handed from the Golden Island. Even if one does a little virtuous work, but if one is bound by one's own desires, it is like delicious food mixed with poison. Even if one knows that the eight worldly concerns are the prison of samsara, but if one cannot abandon them, it is like being attached to the body of a rakshasi. Even if one remembers impermanence and death for a moment, but if one clings to the appearances of this life, it is like knowingly drinking poison. Even if one knows that the practice of Dharma is easy, but if it is not connected to one's mind, it is like a yogi losing a treasure. Even if one has confidence in practicing the Dharma, but if one always procrastinates, it is like hail falling during the harvest season. Even if one is eloquent, speaks sincerely, and gives pleasing teachings, but if one has not experienced it oneself, it is like a prescription without medicine. Even if one speaks to others about cause and effect and vows, but if one does not practice them oneself, it is like a parrot reciting the Dharma. Even if one makes strict laws and regulations, but if one is controlled by arrogance, it is like a military law of an official. Even if one supports the Sangha with the hope of benefiting oneself, but most

Like feeding a fledgling bird that brings no benefit. Like benefactors who do not support each other in accordance with the Dharma. Like monkeys mostly not starving but exhausting their life force. Like seeking a friend for vital energies, relying on a secret companion. Like friends mostly being worldly constellations. Like vows, marital relations, and disciples being taught. Like stars in the daytime that are virtuous and proper. Even if spending a lifetime in village disputes. Like the endless ripples of black water from karma. Even when busy with worldly affairs, thinking of striving in Dharma. Like the endless comings and goings of the marketplace. Even if not understanding the Dharma, merely holding the form of a Dharma practitioner. Like being outwardly beautiful but wrapping uncleanliness in silk. Even if not benefiting the Buddha's teachings, having the name of a monastery and a tulku. Like the quickly impermanent morning star. Even if noisy and chaotic, having temporary power and happiness. Like a magical show that changes in an instant. Even these well-arranged and beautiful actions. Like a dream that shatters in an instant. Even the sweet and pleasant worldly teachings of this life. Like a temporary beauty, an endless marketplace show. Even if teacher and student are noisy and happy for a moment. Like an impermanent and illusory mirage city. Even if wearing soft clothes and eating delicious food, being temporarily happy. Like dew on leaves in the morning sun that does not last. Like someone without qualities claiming to be a guru's emanation. Like conjoined twins falling off a cliff, unable to accomplish both aims. Even if without qualities, proclaiming oneself as a reincarnation. Like a donkey wearing a leopard skin, being deceitful. Even if not accomplishing one's own benefit, claiming to benefit others. Like a madman becoming a leader. Even if having many thoughts, not being united as one. Like a blind man shooting arrows that never hit the target. Now, if we do not integrate Dharma into our minds. Life will be wasted, like wishing for a kingdom in vain. Alas, these thirty-eight similes. Are spoken out of sorrow for one's own behavior. The outer, inner, and secret changes of the times. Have you seen or heard them, Tshewang Norbu? The suffering of the six realms of samsara, the nature of birth and death. Just remembering it makes the heart tremble, what about experiencing it? Now it has arrived and is quickly approaching. This cycle of rebirth again and again, how pitiful! From now on, uphold vows properly. Admonish yourself, be steadfast like a stake. Feel remorse and regret for the bad deeds of the past. Feel ashamed of careless and lazy actions. From now on, quickly attain the good path of lasting happiness, the fruit of enlightenment.
