For younger people, generate the perception of attendants; for older people, generate the perception of parents; for younger people, generate the perception of children; for peers, generate the perception of siblings, and treat them with respect. The Sutra of Ten Dharmas says: With body, speech, and mind free from evil destinies, generate the perception of the Khenpo as the Buddha, generate the perception of the Acharya as the Khenpo, and with humility and respect, honor the elder, middle, and younger practitioners of the same discipline. The Jataka says: Do not contend with the holy ones, but rely on the spiritual friend with a tamed attitude. By being near them, even without deliberately seeking, one will share in the dust of their qualities. Therefore, do not commit even the slightest secret misdeeds or acts of carelessness. As it is said: Committing sins when unseen, how can one find happiness, like consuming poison? It is impossible for the gods and yogis not to see with their pure eyes. Therefore, remember the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, the rarity of the Buddha's appearance, and so forth, and be mindful. The Ugrapariprccha Sutra says: The Buddha is the great guide who benefits the world, appearing only once in hundreds of millions of kalpas. Now that you have obtained precious leisure and endowments, those who desire liberation should abandon carelessness. Therefore, to protect the Dharma, protect this body slightly from illness and harm, regarding it as a boat. Do not abandon food and clothing, and do not torment yourself with meaningless ascetic practices such as silent retreats. The Bodhicaryavatara says: Regard the body as a mere vessel for coming and going, like a boat. To accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, transform it into a wish-fulfilling body. The Catuhsataka says: Although this body is seen as an enemy, it should still be protected. Maintaining discipline and living long will bring great merit. Therefore, remember impermanence and aspire to enlightenment. The Tale of the Seven Young Women says: For the body and life that will be abandoned, like dew on grass, without attachment, through long habituation, when will great happiness be attained? Therefore, give up wealth to protect life, and generate the mind of Bodhi.

Great Dharma such as patience must be protected even at the cost of one's life. As it says in the Sutra of Advice to the King: I give up wealth to protect my body. I give up wealth and body to protect my life. Wealth, body, and even life, I give up all to protect the Dharma here. Therefore, examine the mind and abandon faults, so that afflictions cannot prevail. As it says in the Brahma's Inquiry: If you thoroughly know the faults of the mind, you will not rely on the faults of the mind. If mindfulness is well established in the mind, you will attain the state of peace without faults. Furthermore, toothpicks, saliva, feces, urine, etc., should be discarded in secluded places where people do not use them, so that they are not visible. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: Toothpicks and saliva should be covered when discarded. It is wrong to discard feces, urine, etc., in usable water and land. And the Vinaya also says not to discard waste at the source of water, etc. When eating, (it says in the Bodhicharyavatara:) do not eat with a full mouth, with noise, or with an open mouth. Wherever you sit, especially in the presence of a lama or in a crowd, do not engage in unseemly bodily conduct such as lying down, leaning, stretching your legs, or rubbing your hands. Sit upright and strive to be dignified. It says: Do not sit with your legs stretched out, and do not rub your hands together. Do not be alone with another woman in a vehicle, on a mattress, or in a dwelling. Avoid seeing, hearing, and associating with all those who have become disbelievers in the world. Furthermore, restrain and subdue all unpeaceful behavior such as jumping, running, laughing, and coquetry, whether it is in body, speech, or mind, and make gentleness the priority. As it says in the Vinaya Garland Sutra: Singing, dancing, gambling, running, etc., watching and engaging in these are the beginning of committing offenses and the root of destroying the life of discipline. Such things are to be abandoned because they are far from enlightenment. As it says in the Sutra Requested by King Udayana: Those who are not truly restrained, wild and arrogant, disrespectful, full of pride and strong attachment, overwhelmed by afflictions, foolish and full of afflictions, are very far from supreme enlightenment. Because one is not tamed and subdued oneself, one goes to tame others.

Because one cannot subdue others, one must first be peaceful and gentle oneself. As it is said in "Praise of Infinite Qualities": "Some, while not having subdued themselves, speak words that are reasonable, but their actions contradict their words, so they cannot subdue others. You, considering this, for that reason, keep all beings in mind, and strive to subdue that which you have not yet subdued." Also, as it is said in the "Heap of Jewels Sutra": "One who cannot cross cannot save others. One who is not liberated cannot liberate others. A blind person cannot show the way. One who is liberated can liberate others, and one with eyes can show the way to the blind." Also, as it is said in the "Ten Dharmas Sutra": "If I strive to save all sentient beings, strive to liberate all sentient beings, and strive to establish all sentient beings in taming and peace, then if I am not tamed, not peaceful, and not guarded, it is not my part, and I should be peaceful, tamed, and guarded." Similarly, one should repay the kindness of others, and if harm befalls oneself, one should take it as a cause for karma and enlightenment, and among all things, one should endure fatigue and hardship like a mother, and when one develops attachment to others, one should generate the concept of a lowborn person, walk slowly, accomplish tasks, and do all speech with mindfulness, awareness, and caution, and one should not engage in slandering others or acting with attachment and hatred, even in dreams. The daytime is divided into morning, noon, and afternoon, and the nighttime is divided into the first watch, the middle watch, and dawn. In these three periods, one should practice the accumulation of prostrations, the accumulation of confessing sins, and the accumulation of dedication, such as reciting the "Three Heaps Sutra" and the "Confession Chapter" of the "Bodhisattva's Way of Life," and one should learn to recite, as it is said in the "Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Three times each day and night, one should recite the Three Heaps Sutra." Furthermore, all actions and behaviors should be spent in a virtuous manner, as it is said in the "Ornament of the Sutras": "When a bodhisattva acts, in whatever way the sense faculties enter into various objects, in that way, with appropriate and consistent words, one should first act for the benefit of sentient beings." As it is said in the "Flower Garland Sutra, Chapter on the Practices and Vows of Samantabhadra," when a bodhisattva enters a room...
