Fourth, the five signs of certainty are: Now, because the habitual tendencies of your previous attachments have arisen, you do not truly know that you are dead. Therefore, due to its influence, you feel unbearable pain at the mourning and weeping of your former relatives and descendants, and even if you go to them and speak, they do not see you or hear you. Although intense suffering and attachment arise, your previous life has passed, and your future life has not yet been taken. Now you are wandering homelessly in the bardo, experiencing the illusions of the bardo. The reason for this truth is that five signs, which are different from when you were alive and which must be present in the bardo, are appearing and manifesting to you. What are they? When you were alive, touching with your hand would leave a handprint, walking with your feet would leave footprints, your body would have a shadow, and shaking a bell or clapping your hands would produce sounds, and so on. But now, like a dream body, touching with your hand leaves no handprint, walking with your feet leaves no footprints, clapping your hands and shaking a bell produce no sound, and your body has no shadow. Recognize from this that you are in the bardo. Similarly, when you were alive, you would be obstructed by large and small objects such as walls, but now, whether they are large like Mount Meru, horses, and cattle, or small like the eye of a needle or a horse's tail, you are not obstructed by any object and can pass through them unimpeded. This is also a sign that you are definitely in the bardo. When you were alive, others could hear you speak, but now, no matter how much you speak to your relatives and descendants, they cannot hear you. This is also a sign that you are definitely in the bardo. When you were alive, you did not have clairvoyance, but now, you have defiled clairvoyance, and the appearances of all containers and contents appear in turn.

The fifth is the six signs of uncertainty: there is no certainty of place, such as empty houses, caves, mountains, forests, and space; there is no certainty of friends, such as gods, humans, hungry ghosts, demons, and ogres; because it is difficult to be independent, various foods and clothing of the six realms appear, so there is no certainty about food and clothing; there is no certainty of support, such as the eight root channels, bridges, and resting places; various behaviors are impermanent, changing and moving every moment, so there is no certainty about behavior; feelings of happiness and suffering in the mind are unbearable, arising, ceasing, and disappearing every moment, and then other appearances arise. When the later appearance arises, the earlier ones are forgotten, just as one does not remember the previous dreams in a dream, so there is no certainty about the way the mind appears. Thinking, "Alas, I am dead! Now who do I rely on, what do I do?" A strong fear arises, and like a small child abandoned, not knowing where to go, with no support. Seeing one's own food and possessions being used by others, strong anger blazes like fire. In short, unimaginable illusions arise, dominated by appearances of fear and suffering. The previous life has passed, and the next has not yet been taken, so now, with no place to go and no support, wandering in the bardo, tormented by unbearable great suffering. Not knowing what to do, you are indeed correct, but all of these are merely illusions appearing in the bardo, and there is not even a little bit of truth to them. It is no different from experiencing fear in a dream. Therefore, be certain that all appearances are illusions appearing in the absence of existence, and abandon the mind of fear. Do not be attached to anything, and grasp the essential point of the profound instructions. It is important to continuously maintain the thought that one must achieve liberation at this time. Third, the appearances of the bardo are: Your karmic connection to residing in your own house and land, etc., is now exhausted. The opportunity to be together with friends and relatives is depleted. The karmic power to enjoy the accumulated food, wealth, and possessions is also separated. When the length of life reaches its end, each person goes separately to the path of the next world according to their previous karma, which is the nature of all things. You who have passed away, all of your past experiences remain only as traces in consciousness. Now, the unimaginable appearances of the bardo are arising, and all of this arises from the illusion of your own mind. There is not even a particle of something that exists separately from the outside. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Who created the iron burning ground? From where did these masses of fire arise? The Buddha said that all of those are the mind of sin." Know it as such. Appearance

由于这些仅仅是错觉，并非真实存在，所以，对于显现的美丽的形色、悦耳的声音、芬芳的气味、甘甜的滋味以及柔滑的触感，都仅仅是错觉，不要执着和贪恋。同样，对于丑陋的形色、难听的声音等等，也仅仅是自心的错觉，不要因为不悦而生起憎恨和想要抛弃的念头。同样，敌友的显现也仅仅是错觉，不要对显现为敌人的人生起嗔恨，对显现为朋友的人产生贪恋。冷热的显现也是错觉，不要因为受热而感到痛苦就产生厌恶，也不要对寒冷产生贪恋和渴望。即使受到寒冷的侵袭，也不应该想要抛弃，也不应该贪恋温暖。当显现为女性时，不要对男性产生贪恋，对女性产生憎恨。同样，当显现为男性时，不要对女性产生贪恋，对男性产生憎恨。如果对显现为男女的形象产生贪恋和憎恨，就会进入胎生和卵生。中阴阶段显现的男女形象也仅仅是自心的显现，是对境的错觉，因此产生贪恋和憎恨是错误的。此外，如果对处所产生贪恋，就会进入化生；如果对温暖和滋味产生贪恋，就会进入湿生，因此要舍弃对这些的贪恋。对于显现为令人愉悦的土地和地方，以及感受到气味的芬芳，这些都是没有却显现的错觉，不要产生喜悦或悲伤，也不要产生贪恋。即使看到刽子手、凶猛的野兽等令人恐惧的生物，也要确信这如同梦境一般是错觉，不要感到恐惧。总之，对于显现为好坏的任何事物，都要舍弃贪恋和憎恨，以及取舍、期望和担忧等二元对立的念头。正如《树问经》中所说： “如于明镜之圆满中， 如何无有自性者， 面容之圆显现般， 树慧！如是了知诸法。” 以及《三摩地王经》中所说： “如幻术师所变现之色， 马与象及车乘种种等， 于彼如实显现皆无有， 如是当知一切诸法性。” 如是，要生起强烈的、一心一意的忆念，了知一切法皆如幻如化，无有真实。而且，中阴的所依是容易转变的，识
