The perfect Buddha, the supreme two-legged one, the Teacher then spoke to him: "Whatever merit there is from circumambulating a stupa, I will explain a little. By circumambulating a stupa, gods, nāgas, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kinnaras, and mahoragas will make offerings. Having obtained the difficult-to-find leisure, even for just a moment, by circumambulating a stupa, one will abandon the eight unfree states. Reverend Sir. By the great power of miracles, one becomes Indra, the great lord of the gods. Whatever wise person offers a garland of flowers to the Buddha's stupa with a joyful heart, measuring it with two million gold coins from all the rivers of Jambudvipa, it cannot be compared to it. Whatever wise person anoints the Buddha's stupa with scented water with a joyful heart, measuring it with a hundred thousand gold heaps from all the rivers of Jambudvipa, it cannot be compared to it. Whatever wise person offers lamps to the Buddha's stupa with a joyful heart, measuring it with a hundred million gold coins from all the rivers of Jambudvipa, it cannot be compared to it. Whatever wise person raises victory banners, pennants, and parasols to the Buddha's stupa with a joyful heart, even a hundred thousand golden mountains like Mount Meru cannot be compared to it.
