The four special preliminaries. The four special preliminaries. The third is the four special preliminaries: the causal condition, the dominant condition, the objective condition, and the immediately preceding condition. The first is: At the time of the cause, one needs a renunciate who is free from clinging to reality and has no attachment to anything. Therefore, by the power of the previously taught common preliminaries, one knows that it is difficult to obtain this precious human body of leisure and endowment. By meditating on impermanence, one knows that this life is as impermanent as a dewdrop on the tip of a blade of grass, and nothing can prevent it from quickly decaying, and one does not know when one will die. Thinking that on the morning of death, nothing but the Dharma will help, therefore, the wealth and enjoyment of this life are useless for subduing enemies and protecting friends, and one strives without a moment's懈怠 solely for the sake of the next life, thereby taming one's mind, correctly recognizing the characteristics of samsaric phenomena, feeling weary and disgusted, and desiring to attain liberation, without the slightest attachment to this life, let alone worldly trivialities. Abandoning all listening, contemplation, analysis, explanation, oral transmission, recitation, etc., that are in accordance with the Dharma, one should abide in a very secluded place, cutting off all internal and external distractions, in a manner of completely abandoning all activities. The necessity of doing so is that the Great Seal is the direct pointing to the nature of mind, and if the mind follows after noise and distraction, samadhi will not arise, therefore one should practice in a secluded place. The sixteenth Dharma discourse, the fifteenth object of focus. The second is: The path to realizing the Great Seal depends entirely on the guru, therefore one needs a true spiritual friend. Regarding this, there are the guru of the lineage of individuals, the guru of the Sugata's teachings, the guru of the appearing stone, and the guru of the ultimate nature of reality. The first is: From Vajradhara to one's own root guru, the practice of the oral instructions passed down has not deteriorated, and one is able to generate special realizations in the disciple's mindstream, and is able to open the wisdom of others as one has realized the view, and knows conceptual thoughts as kindness, transforming whatever arises into a friend of wisdom and cultivating it, and even transforming unfavorable adverse conditions into favorable qualities.

Able to transform. All mistakes arise from not recognizing the true nature of thoughts, leading to illusions. If one recognizes thoughts as the mind and uses them as the path, it is contradictory. If one truly understands thoughts, one knows that all phenomena are unobstructed, like brandishing a spear in the sky, which opens the door to wisdom. Therefore, one should seek and rely on a virtuous spiritual friend who possesses these qualities and maintain unwavering devotion and faith. This aligns with what Nāropā said: "The qualities of a guru are that they possess the lineage." Second, once one receives the guru's introduction, certainty arises in one's own mind, and with respect for the teachings of the Buddhas, through careful examination and analysis, if the practice aligns or does not align with the Dharma, after verification, experiences will arise that do not contradict the key instructions of both the Great and Small Vehicles, thus the scriptures appear as key instructions, and this is called a guru. If one does not possess such key points and merely clings to one-sided words and letters of the tenets of the Great and Small Vehicles, and rashly judges right and wrong, truth and falsehood, this is impure and should be abandoned. This is the correct way to rely on the guru of the Sugata's teachings. Third, unwavering faith is the basis for generating all qualities, using the Dharmadhatu, etc., as examples to demonstrate, therefore, earth is a virtuous spiritual friend. Continuous diligence, or moistening the mind with the water of compassion, etc., are shown, therefore, water is a virtuous spiritual friend. Using the fire of wisdom to burn the firewood of afflictions, and using the flames of wisdom to dispel the darkness of ignorance, etc., are shown, therefore, fire is a virtuous spiritual friend. Using the power of the wind of realization to destroy obscuring objects, etc., are shown, therefore, wind is a virtuous spiritual friend. Being free from all extremes and pervading all, etc., are shown, therefore, space is a virtuous spiritual friend. Like this, all internal and external phenomena that appear and will appear are not without being the guru. Therefore, whether or not one analyzes and interprets appearances, one can determine and see from them, and this is the method of relying on the guru through the symbolism of appearances. Fourth, the supreme guru introduces one's own mind without inversion, and through direct realization, it is finally determined, thereby realizing the suchness of all phenomena, and this is also the guru. These
