74 74 Therefore, from the great Brahmin Saraha to Śawaripa, and from the lord Maitripa to the glorious Dagpo Kagyu tradition, this lineage of Mahamudra, which transcends thought and is inconceivable, does not primarily emphasize analytical meditation in either the context of tranquility or insight. Instead, it focuses on the practice of settling the mind, where the mind is placed in its own ground, the dharma in its own nature, and the ground in its own place, without any fabrication. This is done primarily as an antidote to the manifest afflictions and clinging, and later to sever the seeds of afflictions and clinging, in order to cultivate the wisdom of insight. By emphasizing this practice of settling without fabrication, all the obscurations of artificial constructs naturally subside. As Saraha said, "The mind bound by ropes, when released, is undoubtedly liberated." And, "Those bound strive to go in all directions, but when released, they remain unmoving and stable. I understand it like an inverted camel. Child, you should always gaze at yourself." And, "Place the mountain of the sky and the water-drinker beside it, let it be as it is." Therefore, the mountain rising in the ocean, when viewed from the sky above the ocean, appears as if the mountain is drinking water, with its head and tail inverted, forming an image. This cannot be reversed by any means, but must be left as it is. Similarly, if one does not engage in considering artificial obscurations as the nature of the mind, but instead places luminosity as the nature, there is no way to change it. Therefore, those who wish to attain manifest enlightenment have no other method than to place the mind in its own unfabricated, unadorned, and relaxed state. Thus, one should settle in that state. Some say that it is impossible to settle the mind in such a way, without fabrication, action, or adornment. This is because the mind itself is a fabricated and artificial thing, conditioned by various circumstances, and is an agent of compounded phenomena such as arising and ceasing. Moreover, it is impossible for the mind not to be associated with mental factors such as virtuous, non-virtuous, and neutral. Therefore, the various actions of body, speech, and mind arise effortlessly in the mind, intellect, and consciousness, and this cannot be denied by any means, either by oneself or others. To this, if one prevents the causes and conditions for the arising of the mind

Not fabricating, and not engaging in conceptualization by blocking the nature and origin of the mind, etc., and forcibly abiding in non-fabrication by blocking the three actions of agent, object, and action of the mind and mental factors, and it is not even possible to abide. How to abide in non-fabrication, etc.? By taking the words and treatises of the Sugata as authority, one should understand from them as follows: Whatever the mind and mental factors are, the original nature of all of them is the clear, aware, empty, and stainless naked state. From that, whatever is newly known of the characteristics of past, future, and present objects, and the attention that grasps them, do not alter it with any attachment or aversion. Abide in the natural state of not altering and not changing into alteration. Furthermore, regarding the feeling of the outward-looking objects of the mind and mental factors, after experiencing it, do not follow the various concepts that grasp it as a characteristic, do not follow the other appearances of objects of action that are led by it, but abide in non-conceptualization. For mental factors such as faith, the essence of that very thing, clarity, awareness, and emptiness, is merely inseparable from mindfulness. Other than that, without being distracted by the activity of other conceptual thoughts, it is placed in a natural state of non-fabrication and non-effort, and it is possible to place it in that way. If it is not possible to place it in that way, then all the teachings and treatises of the Victorious Ones, together with their sons and disciples, which say to practice view and meditation by not fabricating with the mind, not grasping at things and characteristics, and not paying attention, would all become meaningless. To that, some say that it is meaningful to say that, but you Kagyu people, because of your meager fortune, do not have the right to practice the view and meditation of emptiness by not fabricating with elaboration, not conceptualizing objects and characteristics, and not paying attention. To that, the Teacher, the Sugata himself, said that those who are not me or like me cannot measure beings. Therefore, to the Teacher, the Buddha, who measures the lineage of the Dagpo Kagyu, what else is there to do but prostrate and take refuge? Even when there is no opportunity to actually practice the view and meditation of emptiness that is devoid of the characteristics of things and elaborations, one can only pray to become a fortunate one who can practice in that way. There is no other way of Dharma practice.
