63 63 Having meditated in this way, with regard to the types of individuals, there are three types of beings: those with sharp faculties who have excellent prior training and quickly generate experience and realization; those with middling faculties who have some prior training and make gradual progress; and those with inferior faculties who have only partial prior training. Just as a skilled physician cures diseases of all kinds, even those that affect the head, with various medicines, behaviors, and treatments, so too, a realized lama leads worthy disciples higher and higher on the path by means of limitless Dharma methods that eliminate obstacles and increase merit. Furthermore, with regard to whatever view and meditation are to be realized, there are three aspects: understanding, experience, and realization. Understanding is when the object to be realized is apprehended by the wisdom of hearing and thinking, through verbal concepts. Experience is when the object to be realized is held as a focus, and the mind is absorbed in it, making it the object of the wisdom that arises from meditation. Realization is when, based on the mind being absorbed in the object to be realized, one goes beyond merely the state of single-pointed shamatha, and makes it the object of the discriminating wisdom of conceptual or non-conceptual thought. In this instruction on Mahamudra Coemergent Union, with regard to the way of traversing the bhumis and paths of how experience arises, Lord Gampopa made it into four yogas. The venerable and glorious lamas who hold the lineage of these, have made many different presentations of it. Among these, the four yogas of understanding, experience, and realization of Mahamudra are made into thirty-two, and each of these twelve is further divided into superior, middling, and inferior based on the distinction of having attained stability, thus transforming into thirty-six. Furthermore, the two, shiné and lhagthong, of transcending and not transcending the world, each have four yogas, sixteen in total, and each of these sixteen is further divided into superior, middling, and inferior based on the distinction of having attained stability, thus forming forty-eight classifications. There are also the one-pointed yoga of the accumulation-application path, the yoga of freedom from elaboration from the path of seeing up to the seven impure bhumis, the yoga of the single taste of the three purities, and the placing of the Buddha bhumi as without meditation, etc. All the various different occurrences should not be seen as contradictory, because such experience

Because I myself, when explaining and entering the terms of the four yogas, can obtain them without error. Here, as mentioned above, from the thought itself, without needing to eliminate or establish the thought itself, but from the realization of seeing the self-face of the Dharmakaya, free from attachment to experience, taking this as the basis for starting the four yogas, that kind of realization itself, because there is no separation or attainment, is not shaken by anything else, but remains single-pointedly, is the single-pointed yoga. In that yoga itself, all the elaborations of the cause and effect of samsara and nirvana, in the emptiness of non-elaboration, are as pure as the sky, is the non-elaboration yoga. From the nature of that non-elaboration yoga itself, playing with the samadhi of the manifestation of the many elaborations of samsara and nirvana, is the one-taste yoga. When the realization of non-elaboration arises, cause and effect appear as emptiness. The many are realized as one taste. When the realization of one taste arises in the continuum, emptiness appears as cause and effect. One taste appears as many. Therefore, one should understand the occasions of non-elaboration and one-taste yoga in sequence. The venerable Phagmo Drupa said that realizers can become Buddhas by discarding their skulls. Later, the school changed, saying that the cycle of the birth of realizers will not be broken. Then, that yoga itself abandons all that should be abandoned, and realizes all that should be realized, is the non-meditation yoga. This way of generating the experience of the four yogas, in this land of snow. It is known as the realization Dharma of Jey Dakpo Lhaje. However, the Fourth Shamarpa, Chokyi Wangchuk, said that the four yogas at this time, according to the guidance of the Mahamudra of the tantric tradition, are explained as the wisdom of the Mahamudra itself, which has become the nature of the four joys of ascending and descending, and stabilizing below. If we speak according to the common guidance of Sutra and Tantra, it is the way of generating the Mahamudra experience that is in accordance with such four joys. This is an unparalleled gracious instruction to generate deep faith in the followers of the Kagyu lineage. Therefore, the noble paths and grounds of the experience of the four yogas of Mahamudra and
