It is said that this state will naturally and effortlessly appear or manifest. This ordinary consciousness, which is untainted and unaltered, has been defiled and disturbed from beginningless time by the eight consciousnesses or the six consciousnesses, as well as by countless adventitious defilements of mind and mental factors. However, this ordinary consciousness itself, from the very beginning, has not been affected by defilements and the like, and therefore arises continuously. Through the power of accumulation and purification, it is liberated from all false, erroneous, and artificial appearances. The untainted, natural, ordinary consciousness will manifest. This consciousness also manifests because it was originally present, and it is not achieved through newly accumulated merits. Therefore, it is said in the sutras and tantras: "The Sugata-garbha pervades all beings." Gyalwa Godtsangpa also said: "The consciousness at the time of beings, exists within the Dharmakaya, even without the lama's instruction, it can be easily realized." Therefore, when such ordinary consciousness manifests, all adventitious defilements will be self-purified, thereby severing all the sufferings of falling into the two extremes of samsara and nirvana, and realizing the inseparable bliss and emptiness of the Dharmakaya and wisdom. Therefore, Pal Togtsepa said: "Ordinary consciousness awakens in the heart, when the six consciousnesses are purified, great bliss is continuous. All attachments are meaningless, the source of suffering, rest in the natural state that needs no cultivation." As it is said: "The nature of consciousness has transcended, it is not stained by pure wisdom." And so on, countless scriptures record this. So, are the primordial ordinary consciousness, the Sugata-garbha, and the adventitious defilements, the conceptualizations of the eight consciousnesses, established as two independent, real existences? It is not so. Because in all phenomena, there does not exist even the slightest part that is established as a real existence, it is merely an illusion. Therefore, manifesting it is considered to be manifesting the Svabhavikakaya. The primordial ordinary consciousness is the consciousness of the adventitious defilements and the eight consciousnesses that has not been defiled by elaboration and has not been altered. When it is placed in this state, its essence is pure, clear, and without defilement, like water and butter.

Just as leaving turbid water to settle clarifies it, allowing reflections to appear, and just as immaculate light can clearly blaze, without touching the key point of the conceptual thoughts of the eight aggregates of consciousness, which are adventitious defilements and the basis for manifesting innate ordinary wisdom, one cannot manifest innate ordinary wisdom. Therefore, considering that meaning, the great Karmapa Rangjung Dorje (3rd Karmapa, 1284-1339) said, "The nature of the eight aggregates of consciousness abides in the essence of the five wisdoms, free from all defilements." Therefore, it is necessary to touch the key point of conceptual thought itself. Lord Gampopa said, "These conceptual thoughts are necessary, are cherished in the heart, and are indispensable." Even in manifesting such ordinary wisdom, observing the nature of conceptual thought itself, or merely pursuing awareness, is the essence of practice. The Indian saint said, "If you do not seize the life force of conceptual thought, you cannot extract the essence of the Dharmakaya." Moreover, the way to cultivate this is not taught in the sutras and tantras by any means other than cultivating the conceptual thought itself in its unaltered, natural state. If one practices the Prajnaparamita, it is said not to attend to any fabricated dharmas. In all the ways of guiding the Six Yogas of Vajra Union, the Heart Essence of Mahamudra, only the way of guiding by maintaining as it is and gathering as it is, is taught. As the great Brahmin said, "Water and fire, abide in self-illumination alone! Coming and going, I neither take nor abandon." One should practice in this way. 54
