54 54 Therefore, regarding this stainless, unconditioned awareness that is free from all obscurations of the nature of mind, the noble Indian masters have used the example of a naked sword drawn from its sheath, a sharp blade without a hilt. Just as the luminous wisdom of one's own mind is like a sharp, hiltless sword drawn from the sheath of elaborations and obscurations of samsara and nirvana, which cuts and cleaves wherever it touches, so too, it severs all the nets of grasping and clinging. Therefore, abiding in the stainless awareness itself is the intention and ultimate wisdom of all Buddhas of the three times. Thus, one should abide in it without alteration. That is, the luminous wisdom of mind is nakedly manifest because of its stainlessness from the perspective of the object of knowledge (chos can), and it is also nakedly manifest because of its stainlessness from the perspective of the nature of reality (chos nyid). The former refers to the fact that the two obscurations, conceptual thoughts, and deluded phenomena do not truly exist, just like illusions. Therefore, without abandoning the stains of delusion, they are purified in the expanse and are nakedly manifest, free from stains. The latter refers to the fact that such luminous self-mind is also free from being established as a real phenomenon. Moreover, such freedom cannot even be regarded as an appearance of an object of experience in the form of a non-existent phenomenon in conventional terms. Therefore, it is completely purified by the stains of inherent nature and adventitious stains, and it is nakedly manifest because it is free from all elaborations and characteristics. Thus, in the sutras and tantras of the Bhagavan, from the perspective of the object of knowledge, the way in which self-mind, stainless awareness, is nakedly manifest is called "other-emptiness" (gzhan stong), and from the perspective of the nature of reality, the way in which awareness is nakedly manifest is called "self-emptiness" (rang stong), which are the two emptinesses. Devoid of elaborations that abandon oneness and difference, and equal in the realm of phenomena, samsara and nirvana are inseparable, and affliction and wisdom, existence and peace, are of one taste. This is the intention spoken from the profound sutras and tantras for those of the sharpest faculties. My master, Nyanpa Rinchen, said so. Therefore, regarding this stainless, naked awareness, Lord Gampopa said: Ordinary consciousness is not made better by the perfect Buddha; the delusion of sentient beings does not cause them to fall into the lower realms; this is the unchanging nature of the dharma realm. It cannot be altered by any modification, and it does not go to any extreme of permanence or annihilation, nor does it...
