34 34 Therefore, when guided by an experienced lama, some students, upon being shown just one or two objects of focus for mind-holding and one or two methods of transforming the connection of accumulation and purification, develop great devotion and renunciation, and their meditation seems to be going well. But then, continuing to meditate, like a brief evening shower, their minds become ordinary, empty, and weak, eventually becoming just casual recitation, clinging to one or two behaviors. Eventually, some become servants, merchants, or farmers, and so on. Some, even if they focus their minds on hundreds of objects, their minds do not want to settle. Sometimes, a state of effortless distraction arises. Some, even after doing accumulation and purification for many years, gain nothing but stubbornness and wickedness. But sometimes, due to factors such as aversion, renunciation, devotion, and compassion, they regard death as a pain in the heart, cherish the sacred Dharma as the only thing in their hearts, and become practitioners who ultimately complete their practice. Still others, sometimes their stability becomes firm, and sometimes they roughly manifest the seeds of attachment, hatred, and jealousy. Sometimes, they suddenly develop strong devotion and so on, and sometimes they suddenly develop strong aversion. Having meditated for many years in this way, it seems that they progress each year, and it seems that they regress each year. For any virtuous activity, sometimes it seems that stability hinders progress, sometimes it seems that friends hinder progress, and sometimes it seems that favorable conditions hinder progress. Due to these reasons, various uncertain changes in experience occur. Due to such reasons, some become great meditators who complete their practice, develop genuine renunciation, and abandon this life as great renunciates. Some are deluded by the noise and bustle of this life, dominated by great lamas and communities, wandering around like feathers blown by the wind, or some become lazy, relying only on meaningless recitations. Some are meticulous about food and drink, doing everything for the sake of this life, dividing their time day and night, pretending to be yogis in front of people, disguising their behavior as Dharma. The city people will say, 'This person is an unparalleled practitioner in the world today.'

Since many things such as praise and material gain will occur, in this degenerate age, if one takes on disciples and guides their minds into the sacred Dharma, then most of the unfortunate disciples will likely come under the control of demons. Therefore, all, including the teacher, disciples, and Dharma friends, should protect each other from both internal and external demons in various ways. Even for the lowest type of disciple who can have their mind turned to other sacred Dharmas, this can happen: although they may be influenced by others due to temporary friends or other minor negative circumstances, if they fundamentally trust and rely on the Lama as an infallible refuge, and have unwavering faith in this, then they will think, 'How wonderful it would be if I could have the fortune to break the dust of that Lama's feet into a million parts and place a portion of it on my head!' Therefore, they will strive to fulfill the Lama's instructions to the best of their ability. Even if they cannot do so, no matter how unfavorable the situation they may find themselves in, they will pray that the Lama will become their guide without ever being separated from him. Even if there is no dedication, if a wish arises that they will not give up no matter who tries to stop them, then the mind that has previously turned to Dharma will naturally become the cause for going on the path of Dharma in the future. Even the mind that has not previously turned to Dharma will turn to Dharma again and become a cause for going on the path of Dharma. If this is not the case, then for those who do not trust the refuge Lama and the Three Jewels, they will immediately say that they have lost interest, that they have become generous, that they have become persevering and diligent, that they have become pure in their morality, and so on. Even if they do this for several years, it is because their mind has not turned to Dharma, but is driven by the appearances of this life, causing the Dharma to become like a false Dharma. Therefore, such Dharma will not become the path to liberation, and no matter how the Lama and the Three Jewels try to protect them, they will not be able to protect them, and even the power of the activity of all the Buddhas will be diminished. Whether or not the Three Jewels can protect depends on whether or not one can follow the instructions of the root Lama. Therefore, if one does not take the protection of the Lama and the Three Jewels as the standard, and does not do what they say, but only verbally takes refuge in the Three Jewels, then one will be separated from the protection of the Three Jewels, and thus be far from the opportunity for liberation. Therefore, the difference between internal and external, the way of taking refuge, also depends on this key point. Therefore, virtuous practice
