When the four elements are in perfect harmony, there is little illness during balanced times. However, if these four elements become disordered, they are disturbed by illness. Most of the worldly wealth and enjoyment that appear to increase through the principle of dependent origination will also decline and perish. Whether the time has come or not, the attack of death on life is swift and without delay. When that time comes, those who are defeated on the battlefield of Yama and are about to die must, due to karma, run to a cliff without protectors or allies, and wander in the bardo of existence. At that time, having abandoned the vitality of life and the appearance of the senses, the eyes do not see forms, the ears do not hear sounds, the nose does not smell odors, the tongue does not taste flavors, and the body does not perceive tactile sensations, hence the term abandonment. Furthermore, medicine is ineffective, and doctors and other rituals are also helpless, as if fleeing from the dying person, and there is no other way to think. Previously, the hands could work and the feet could travel, but at this time the limbs are slow, and the breath is involuntarily moved and gasped by karma. When gasping for breath, relatives and friends surround the bedside, and although tormented by suffering, there is no prayer for immortality, and one loses the stability of dwelling, as if caught by an iron hook. The movement of that breath, like the tip of a horse's tail, is cut off by the sharp axe of the Lord of Death, and unlike the time of life, like showing teeth that have abandoned beauty, one must enter the thick darkness of existence according to the good or evil of karma. A brief summary of the second chapter of the Treasury of Qualities. Chapter Two.
