Collection of Instructions by Ju Mipham, MP174, 'A Clear Mirror on the Preliminary Studies of Calendrical Science' 11-10-1a 'A Clear Mirror on the Preliminary Studies of Calendrical Science' ༄༅། །གཙུག་ལག་རྩིས་ཀྱི་སྔོན་འགྲོ་རབ་གསལ་མེ་ལོང་ཞེས་བྱ་བ་བཞུགས་སོ། ། 11-10-1b ༄༅། །Om Swasti! Homage to the wisdom of all the Victorious Ones, Embodied as the youthful form of Manjushri. Before the Lion of Speech, Jamyang, I prostrate with utmost reverence. For those who wish to engage in the clear science of calculation, As a seed for cultivating delightful thoughts, I write this preliminary guide to opening the door of calendrical science, Like a clear and illuminating mirror. This includes what is to be calculated, the means of calculating, and the methods of calculating. Firstly: There are two types of calendrical science: the calendrical science of the essential nature and the calendrical science of ignorant delusion. The former is the emptiness itself, the nature of all phenomena, Which is the complete abandonment of the web of elaboration. If one realizes this, one transcends calculation. The latter arises from the mind's own appearance, Where the interdependent nature of phenomena is unceasing, And various appearances and existences arise as phenomena. Thus, one engages in accepting and rejecting what is beneficial and harmful. That which is to be calculated, Can be symbolized by three turtles. The turtle of abiding is the Dharmadhatu (Tibetan: ཆོས་ཀྱི་དབྱིངས།, Sanskrit: Dharmadhatu, realm of phenomena), Without limbs, it transcends calculation. When one realizes it as it is, One attains the unmoving, self-aware wisdom. The turtle of arising, Symbolizes the four elements arising in sequence from space. It shows the manifold lords of the sky, Appearing as the arrangement of sentient beings' karma. Then, there is the turtle of existence, The source of various forms. From the great golden turtle, Arise the eight great gods of the trigrams, and so forth. The realms of existence unfold in sequence, Giving rise to the environment, beings, directions, times, and the acceptance and rejection of things. Thirdly, the methods of calculating the ways of existence, Without confusion, for accepting and rejecting, Are supreme for illuminating the world. To teach this, on the five-peaked mountain of China, From the burl of the Trisha tree, Through various methods of the vehicles, Thinking for the benefit of beings, He was born as an emanation of Manjushri. Like the turtle of existence, Symbolized by the turtle of emanation, Before the five classes of retinue of gods, nagas, asuras, and humans, He opened the door of calendrical science. Knowing good and bad, and knowing the times, One understands everything clearly, but due to necessity, It was again hidden as a treasure. Later, at the urging of the lord of Grudhrakuta (Vulture Peak), When the great teacher of Oddiyana (Padmasambhava) emanated as the four-faced Brahma, Requested by the retinue including the goddess Namgyal and the naga Jotpati, There were three cycles of the Kalachakra, Vache, and Ananta (endless) systems That spread in this land of Tibet. From that root, Various instructions arose, beyond expression. Although the nature of all phenomena is empty, For sentient beings with conceptual minds, It becomes a measure, this is the relative truth. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Divination. The unmistakable principle of dependent origination is clearly revealed; everything converges on the path of divination. Therefore, this method was taught by the Victorious One (Buddha). All calculations in divination start from the turtle's body, with its head pointing south and its tail pointing north. Its left lung faces east, and its right lung faces west. Its limbs point to the cardinal directions, lying supine. From the center, it goes to heaven, iron, mountain, fire, water, earth, wood, and wind in the center. The so-called outer, inner, and intermediate calculations involve the year, trigram, and nine palaces as follows: East-upper is Tiger, east-lower is Rabbit, southeast is Dragon, south-upper is Snake, south-lower is Horse, southwest is Sheep, west-upper is Monkey, west-lower is Bird (Rooster), northwest is Dog, north-upper is Pig, north-lower is Mouse, northeast is Ox. Mouse, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, and Dog are Yang years; the remaining six are Yin years. The beginning of the year is the Rat year, the beginning of the month is the Tiger month in spring, and the beginning of the time is the Rabbit hour at dawn. These are all associated with the five elements. The arrangement of the eight trigrams in directions is: Li (離) is fire, Kun (坤) is earth, Dui (兌) is metal, Qian (乾) is heaven, Kan (坎) is water, Gen (艮) is mountain, Zhen (震) is wood, and Xun (巽) is wind. The four cardinal directions correspond to their respective elements, while the four intermediate directions are considered to be of the earth element. The calculation of the nine palaces starts from the center. For example, if Five Yellow is in the center, then Six White is in Qian, Seven Red is in Dui, and so on, arranged in the original order. The twelve animals, such as the Rat, cycle in order as the heavenly stem years. The same applies to months, days, and times. These are divided into sixty-year cycles through the power and attributes of the five elements. The method for determining these powers is to combine the year and month, and calculate the day and time separately. The four—year, month, day, and time—are, in order, the mother giving birth to the child. Therefore, the heavenly stem years are divided into Yin and Yang, and those of the same attribute are calculated in order. The method for determining the life force, body, luck, and destiny of the sixty-year cycle is: life force is the direction in which the element resides; Tiger and Rabbit are wood, Horse and Snake are fire, Rooster and Monkey are metal, Rat and Pig are water, and Dog, Dragon, Ox, and Sheep are earth. The key to indicating the body is: Ox, Sheep, Horse, and Rat start counting from wood; Dog, Dragon, Pig, and Snake start counting from metal; Tiger, Rabbit, Rooster, and Monkey start counting from water; and so on, counting in order as metal, water, fire, earth, and wood. The foothold of power and body should correspond. The key to indicating the luck is: the triad of Tiger, Horse, and Dog has the luck in Monkey (metal); the triad of Pig, Sheep, and Rabbit has the luck in Snake (fire); the triad of Rat, Dragon, and Monkey has the luck in Tiger (wood); the triad of Rooster, Ox, and Snake has the luck in Pig (water). Combine the triad with the birth chart of the luck. The life force deity is considered the mother of life. The method for determining the power of the months is: the first month of spring is the Tiger month, and the second month of spring is the Rabbit month, which is considered the child of the heavenly stem year, and then calculated in order, or calculated quickly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
