Just like chopping at a tree, no matter how many times you strike, you can't cut it down. Similarly, if Śamatha (Sanskrit, Śamatha, Romanized Sanskrit, Shamatha, Calm Abiding) is not achieved beforehand, then for the mind of analysis, there is no resin to adhere to, and no matter how much you analyze, the power to destroy opposing factors will not arise. Just as a strong person's hand is very steady, and if they take a sharp axe and chop, they can quickly cut down a tree, similarly, if you take the sharp sword of wisdom of the mind, held by the very steady hand of the Samadhi of Śamatha (Sanskrit, Śamatha, Romanized Sanskrit, Shamatha, Calm Abiding), and become accustomed to analyzing reality, you will become endowed with the power to destroy opposing factors. As it says in the first Gomrim, "Therefore, with the hand of Samadhi, grasp the mind, and with the sword of wisdom that is extremely subtle, remove the thorns of the seeds of distorted thoughts about forms and so on that are present in that mind. If you do this, just as trees that are uprooted from the root do not grow again, because there is no root, the mind of distorted thoughts will also not arise." Also, just like chopping at a tree, you can't fell it with just a few chops, similarly, if you don't analyze with wisdom many times, you can't achieve Vipassanā (Sanskrit, Vipaśyanā, Romanized Sanskrit, Vipashyana, Insight) that has power, so you must analyze again and again. When analyzing objects in many ways, although there is no Samadhi that single-pointedly abides without analyzing, you should know that because there is the steady resin of Samadhi, a thought will arise that analyzes in a non-conceptual state. In a mind-stream that is in a very stable state of abiding, the resin of abiding gradually enters, and in this state, if anger and attachment and so on arise, unlike when Śamatha (Sanskrit, Śamatha, Romanized Sanskrit, Shamatha, Calm Abiding) was not achieved before, when intense and uninterrupted things and so on would arise, but instead you see that weak and short-lasting things and so on arise, and then you say that this is a manifestation of wisdom and not a manifestation of conceptual thought, and you also say that even if it is affliction, it cannot create karma, and you also say that from that time on, even if you enter into the causes for the arising of affliction, it cannot bind you, so it is the time when affliction becomes the path, and so on. These things only arise in those who have a very shallow understanding of Samadhi, but you should know that this is a common view of both inner and outer, and both the Great and Small Vehicles. When Śamatha (Sanskrit, Śamatha, Romanized Sanskrit, Shamatha, Calm Abiding) is balanced, even if the part of Śamatha (Sanskrit, Śamatha, Romanized Sanskrit, Shamatha, Calm Abiding) is greater, just like a person who is deluded by sleep, reality is very

It will not be clearly seen, therefore at that time wisdom should be cultivated. This is said because, if one relies too much on calm abiding and does not like the essence of investigation, even if one investigates, it cannot be done, and the mind completely stays on the aspect of calm abiding. If one cultivates through investigation, that is the cultivation of conceptual thought. Therefore, thinking that it is more excellent to cultivate non-conceptual thought in each session, one should not abandon investigative meditation. The teacher Vasubandhu said, "In the form realm, the wisdom arising from hearing that investigates, etc., is from hearing and from cultivation, because there is no wisdom arising from thinking." He said this, and in that explanation, the reason for the absence of wisdom arising from thinking is: "When one strives to think about those things, at that very time, the samadhi itself of those things will come to abide closely." This is said, and even ordinary people born in the form realm, if they strive for the mind arising from thinking, the mind arising from thinking will not extend outward, but will directly enter into samadhi. Each of the two, calm abiding and insight, has two objects, such as it is and such as it is named. As it is also said in the instructions of the Prajñāpāramitā: "For what has become as many as it is and as it is, what has become a non-conceptual image is the object of calm abiding. For what has become as many as it is named and as it is, what has become an image with conceptualization is the object of insight." This is said. Even on the ground of ordinary beings, when generating insight that focuses on what is named, it is not necessarily the case that one must meditate on the aspects of calmness and grossness, because insight will arise from repeatedly examining the characteristics of the eighteen elements. As it is said in the instructions of the Prajñāpāramitā: "Then, relying on that very calm abiding, these various images are just like this, from the realm of form to the realm of mind, these are called all phenomena, and in this way, repeatedly distinguish them, completely examine them, and completely analyze them, and insight will be perfected." This is said. This also seems to be the meaning of the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra. Although this insight does not act as an antidote to manifest afflictions, it does act to train the power of samadhi. For this
