When the teacher who embodies the three kayas appears like a cloud in front of you, generate the thought of taking refuge from the depths of your heart and repeat after me. After giving this instruction, say: "Venerable Sangha, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time forward, until the end of my life, among the two-legged beings, I take refuge in the Buddha. Among those free from attachment, I take refuge in the Dharma. Among the assemblies, I take refuge in the Sangha. From this time forward, until the end of my life, please, venerable one, accept me as a lay follower who takes refuge." After repeating this three times, the teacher says: "It is appropriate." The student says: "Excellent." Having thus recited three times and properly received the vows of refuge, there are three types of precepts. First, the precepts of what to abandon are: From the Great Nirvana Sutra: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha, is a true lay follower, and at no time goes for refuge to other views. Whoever goes for refuge to the sacred Dharma, is free from the mind of harming and hurting. Whoever goes for refuge to the Sangha, does not side with other heretics." Therefore, having gone for refuge to the Buddha, do not go for refuge to worldly deities and do not prostrate to them. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, abandon harming sentient beings. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, do not associate with heretics. Second, the precepts of what to practice are: The Immaculate Son says: "They also worship those forms with faith, and always go for refuge, remembering day and night." Therefore, having gone for refuge to the Buddha, do not disrespect even the mere form of the Tathagata's body, and do not step over its shadow, but make offerings and treat it with respect. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, generate great respect for even a single four-line verse of scripture that exists in the form of letters, and do not disrespect even a single letter. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, show respect to the Sangha, from the ordained to those wearing yellow robes. Third, the precepts of conformity are: In the Vinaya Collection it says: "Relying on a holy person, listening to the sacred Dharma, and being in harmony with the Sangha are taking refuge." Therefore, rely on a holy person, follow the Dharma.

One should train in conduct that accords with and follows the vows. Offer the Three Jewels with offerings of food and drink, day and night continuously, or six times, or three times, or even just for a moment, remember the qualities of the Three Jewels, and strive to take refuge. Having said this, have them prostrate three times, and then dedicate the merit. Even householders who rely on rituals like this can obtain immeasurable merit. In the degenerate age, those who have their hair shaved like hair, and rely on and cause others to rely on the yellow robes, with pure intention that only shows conformity to precepts or vows, a one-sided view that deviates from the correct path, was composed by Rangjung Dorje in glorious Padma Odling. The refuge and precept granting ritual, entitled "The Vine of Higher Realms."
