The Establishment of Speech-Support Letters. The Establishment of Speech-Support Letters. ༈ Secondly, the establishment of speech-support letters has three aspects: essence, definition, and the method of taking them up through classification. First, the essence: the essence is the basis for the formation of names and sentences. Second, the definition: if we derive it from the sounds of byanjan (Tibetan), aktar (Sanskrit), and varna (Sanskrit), it is called letters because it has the functions of clarifying, being immutable, and representing. Third, the classification: in general, our teacher said that there are eighty-four thousand collections of Dharma in the Sutra Pitaka and thirty-three thousand in the Tantra Pitaka, as stated in Yeshe Dorje's 'Collected from All.' The basis for writing these is any white or colored material such as straw, bark, or cloth, written with gold, silver, vermilion, ink, etc., and called 'pustaka' (Sanskrit), which, according to some Tantras, is twelve fingers long, and according to the 'Eight Thousand Verses,' is immeasurable. Although there are said to be sixty-four different types of letters that are the basis for this, those translated into Tibetan include the letters of Brahma, la1nycan (Sanskrit), and dela2khonggseng (Sanskrit), shachen3gnyis (Sanskrit). Similar to these are the eight5 (Sanskrit) types of Dhārika letters. The Nāgara letters with their heads raised upwards number fourteen6 (Sanskrit). The Vartula, with their heads bent downwards, are round. These are called dragon letters1 (Sanskrit). And gyamtso tha16 (Sanskrit), etc. Those not actually counted among the sixty-four letters include the three types of Kashmiri letters19 (Sanskrit), Goda20 (Sanskrit), Gharu21ra (Sanskrit), Sindha22 (Sanskrit), including the Gholi letters24 (Sanskrit), Magadha14 (Sanskrit) letters, Kamata letters26 (Sanskrit), Pu27kam (Sanskrit), Marko letters28 (Sanskrit), Zangling letters29 (Sanskrit), and Sidhakar Rakshasa letters30 (Sanskrit). Among these, except for the four mountain-shaped symbols in the Zangling letters, there are sixteen vowels and thirty-four consonants. These also need to be measured according to the sequence of lines, and the method of taking them up, according to the view of Shalu Lochen, written by Kyoklo, should be learned from the oral tradition. Furthermore, in the praise of the wisdom of Dharma in the 'Name of Perfect Praise,' it says, 'Holding the ten perfections,' etc. After 'par phyi (Sanskrit),' wisdom, the ten powers, the nature of the ten freedoms, the ten freedoms with ten aspects, and the five great emptiness letters, the method of combining vajra, moon, and sun, etc. The method of practice is also in a leftward direction, with dots, tseg drag, A (Sanskrit), I (Sanskrit), Ram (Sanskrit), U (Sanskrit), Lam (Sanskrit), Mu (Sanskrit), Ksha (Sanskrit), Ha, etc., being placed.
