To briefly explain the tenets of the Shentong Madhyamaka according to the omniscient Jonangpas: The ultimate truth is unborn and unceasing, unconditioned, and beyond dependent origination. The conventional truth is characterized by arising and ceasing, dependent on causes and conditions, and is conditioned. Of the two, samsara and nirvana, samsara is encompassed by the three or eight sufferings and is tainted. Great nirvana is the complete transcendence of all suffering and its causes, an untainted great bliss that is continuous. Of the two, consciousness and wisdom, consciousness is like darkness, blackness, or poison, and is to be abandoned, being conventionally self-empty. Self-originated wisdom is like a form of a million lights, like nectar, and is not to be abandoned, being ultimately other-empty. The self-appearance of consciousness is encompassed by the three realms of convention, not transcending suffering and the moment, being the nature of suffering transformed by karma and afflictions. The self-appearance of self-originated wisdom is the ultimate three realms, transcending suffering and the moment, not produced by any cause or condition, and is a great bliss without suffering, continuous. Consciousness and its self-appearance are expressible, thinkable, and speakable, and are suitable as objects of conceptual thought, having parts and examples. Self-originated wisdom and its self-appearance are inexpressible, unthinkable, and unspeakable, being completely beyond the scope of conceptual thought. It is without parts and transcends all examples. Of the two, the Sugata-garbha and adventitious stains, the Sugata-garbha is the clear light Dharmakaya, primordially co-emergent, indestructible, and a great bliss without cessation, pervasive like space. Adventitious stains are the minds and mental factors of the three realms, associated with the flow of breath, and have not abandoned the habitual tendencies of whatever transpires.

My first is that phenomena are like piled-up hailstones, their self-nature being emptiness is conventional emptiness. The second is that because the nature of phenomena is unchanging, their inherent truth is correct and not deceptive; they are not empty of themselves, but everything other than themselves is empty in a conventional way, which is ultimate emptiness. That is also the Dharmakaya and emptiness are two aspects: there is emptiness that is not Dharmakaya, and there is emptiness that is also Dharmakaya. The first is that phenomena, conventional self-emptiness, never exist in their essential nature and cannot be analyzed. The second is that the nature of phenomena, ultimate other-emptiness, is never non-existent and can be analyzed. From the perspective of the three natures, the imputed and dependent natures are adventitious phenomena, which are conventionally self-empty. The two aspects of the perfected nature are the wisdom of the realm of phenomena, which is ultimately other-empty. From the perspective of the three aspects of outer, inner, and other, the outer container world and the inner sentient beings are changing phenomena that are adventitious, which are conventionally self-empty. The other, the Tathagatagarbha, is the unchanging, inherent nature of phenomena, which is ultimately other-empty. In general, from the perspective of the three aspects of ground, path, and fruition, the ground is the Tathagatagarbha, the wisdom of the Alaya-jnana, which is the basis for all samsara and nirvana, the basis for purifying faults, and the basis for manifesting qualities. The basis of the path is the accumulation of the two accumulations and their retinue, which are the means for exhausting faults and manifesting qualities. The accumulation of wisdom eliminates the obscurations of the Dharmakaya's qualities, which are primordially self-perfected and eternally abiding, and the accumulation of merit gradually generates unprecedented qualities of the Rupakaya. The result is the separation result, the Dharmakaya, the ultimate reality, the body of suchness, the generation result, the Rupakaya, the conventional body of symbols, which is the state of perfect self-benefit and other-benefit. Thus, the basis of the Dharmakaya, which is free from defilements, is the inherent lineage, the realm of phenomena, which is all-inclusive and all-exclusive, like a great treasure that has always existed. The lineage that serves as the seed for generating the Rupakaya is the newly created roots of virtue, like a tree with good fruit that gradually grows from scratch. That
