The Ornament of the Essence of Good Explanations on the Two Truths of the Four Tenets The Ornament of the Essence of Good Explanations on the Two Truths of the Four Tenets Herein lies the treatise called "The Ornament of the Essence of Good Explanations on the Two Truths of the Four Tenets." Homage to Muni. To explain the distinctions of the two truths briefly, there are four. First, according to the Vaibhashika school: From the Treasury [Abhidharmakosha]: "A phenomenon such that when it is destroyed or analyzed by the intellect, the mind that apprehends it can be abandoned" is the definition of conventional truth. Examples include a vase and water inside a vase. When a vase is broken into particles, the mind no longer apprehends it as a vase. When water is analyzed by the intellect, removing other qualities like particles, the mind no longer apprehends it as water. This can also be illustrated with pillars, etc. "A phenomenon such that when it is destroyed or analyzed by the intellect, the mind that apprehends it cannot be abandoned" is the definition of ultimate truth. Examples include form, atoms, and the unconditioned. Even if form is broken down into atoms, the mind does not abandon the apprehension of form. An atom cannot be further broken down, and even if the unconditioned is analyzed by the intellect, it is not transcended. Second, according to the Sautrantika school, from the Commentary on Valid Cognition [Pramanavarttika]: Whatever has the power to accomplish an ultimate purpose, Is here considered ultimately existent. The rest is conventionally existent; These explain their own and general characteristics. Thus, a phenomenon that can effectively accomplish a purpose in an ultimate sense is the definition of ultimate truth. Examples include vases and pillars. In this system, ultimate truth, impermanence, entities, conditioned phenomena, and self-characteristics are synonymous. Something that can accomplish purposes such as benefit and harm is considered ultimately true. This is because they believe that things truly exist. A phenomenon that cannot effectively accomplish a purpose in an ultimate sense is the definition of conventional truth. Examples include space and any phenomena that are categorized as one or different, etc. Conventional truth, permanence, non-entities, the unconditioned, and general characteristics are synonymous. In this system, all unconditioned phenomena are conventional truths, so emptiness is also a conventional truth. Third, according to the Cittamatra school: The definitions and distinctions of the two truths are mostly similar to those of the Svatantrika school, but there are differences in the examples. The Cittamatra school believes that form is empty of external objects.

and, the pervasion of imputation that thoroughly investigates the entity and the difference, not established by its own nature, is considered the basis of ultimate truth. The Svatantrika does not think so. Furthermore, this school believes that all ultimate truths are established as truly existent, because they hold that whatever is either the perfectly established or the other-dependent, is pervaded by being truly established. The perfectly established are the ultimate reality, therefore they are established as truly existent, and the other-dependent are considered truly existent because they can produce their own results. Fourthly, in the Madhyamaka school, the views of the Svatantrika are mostly similar to those of the Prasangika, but in one aspect, whatever valid cognition you gain that becomes a valid cognition that ultimately investigates, that is the ultimate truth; whatever valid cognition you gain that becomes a valid cognition that investigates conventionality, that is the nature of conventional truth. The basis is form, etc., which is established merely as designated by the power of appearance that is not determined by consciousness, that is conventional truth; and what is not established merely as designated by its power, but is not established from the perspective of the way the object itself exists, that is considered the basis of ultimate truth. Furthermore, for the conventional, the nature of the correct conventional is that which appears to the mind that makes itself the main object of appearance, and is established as such. The basis is water and pillars, pots, etc., as well as the unconditioned and consciousness, etc., and all colors, etc. The nature of the false conventional is that which does not appear as such to the mind that makes itself the main object of appearance. The basis is water in a mirage, images in a mirror, illusory horses and elephants, people in dreams, etc. Furthermore, there are many subtle differences between the two truths of the Prasangika and Svatantrika. The Prasangika believes that on the object of division, knowable, the categories of division are definitely two truths, which are also definitely two, true and false. On one basis, if truth is refuted by exclusion, then falsity is established as a complete exclusion; if falsity is established as a complete exclusion, then truth is refuted by exclusion, because the two are mutually contradictory substantial contradictions. On all phenomena, what is without inherent existence is ultimate, and what exists in name is the nature of conventional.
