If it arises from no cause, then mind should also arise from inanimate matter. If one cause gives rise to one effect, then the effects are seen to depend on many causes and conditions, like a clay pot. If one cause gives rise to many effects, then the cause and effect are inconsistent, because the effect is many relative to the cause, and the cause is few relative to the effect. If many causes give rise to one effect, then the fault of the former will be reversed. If many causes give rise to many effects, then one cannot produce one, because the many are a collection of ones. Therefore, the mind that you desire does not arise from any cause, and it simply does not arise in any way. Furthermore, if it necessarily exists, is its own nature one or many? According to the former, it will lose the power to focus on many. According to the latter, it must be either material atoms or many moments, which has already been explained. False appearances! The mind, which is merely without appearance, is distinguished from inanimate matter by wisdom, and there is something that cannot be examined or expressed. That is not reasonable, because if it exists in a form, it must be visible, and if it exists without form, then what will it be focused on? Similarly, the continuous arising of wisdom should also be examined, like true appearances. It is unreasonable to have wisdom that possesses a completely pure object of focus, because abandoning all errors and arising as a sign are contradictory. According to the view of false appearances, since the past and present do not exist, the future is not established. If there is no mind that abides and transforms, then how can there be wisdom that abides and transforms? If there is no wisdom, then how can the benefit of sentient beings arise? Like a candle that has burned out, the activity of mind and mental factors ceases, but it does not cease from the very beginning due to quiescence. The benefit of others is solely due to the power of aspiration. This was said by Manjushri. The Essence of Analyzing Philosophical Tenets.
