Homage to the All-Knowing! Briefly, philosophical tenets are of two types: those of other schools and one's own school. Firstly, in general, the views of wrong conceptions are inconceivable. But the most supreme are the lineages of the supreme Brahmins. They assert that there exists a self that is permanent, pervasive, bodiless, and solitary. This is not reasonable. Is that self the aggregates themselves, or something else other than them? The former is not reasonable, because the self is permanent, while the aggregates are impermanent. The latter is not reasonable, because after eliminating the five aggregates, there must be a way to point to the self as something else." , "english_translation": "If someone says that there exists something that has not been realized by anyone, then one should also accept the existence of horns on a donkey and the son of a barren woman. Therefore, if the self cannot be identified as either the aggregates or something different from the aggregates, then one cannot accept a third kind of aggregate that is different from them, and thus it is established that the self does not exist. Furthermore, if someone says that the self exists as the support and the aggregates exist as the supported, this is not reasonable, because such a dharma has not been found. If someone says that the self pervades the aggregates, this is also not reasonable, because the self is one, while the aggregates are many, and their substances are contradictory. It is also not reasonable to say that the self is associated with the aggregates, because the relationship between the two has not been established. It is also not reasonable to say that the self is solitary, because the things pervaded by the self are all different. If one accepts this, then if one person is bound, everyone should be bound. It is also not reasonable to say that the self is not independent, because suffering and happiness, etc., occur even when they are not desired. It is also not reasonable to say that the self is bodiless, because the self that exists outside the body has already been refuted. If one thinks that the body itself is the self, then one would violate the vow of 'bodilessness,' and the third aggregate has not been established. Therefore, this investigation is like trying hard to prove that a rope is a snake." , "english_translation": "Secondly, the Hearers (Śrāvakās) assert that external objects are atoms, and that these atoms exist with intervals, without intervals, and without adhering to each other.

A single ultimate atom does not exist. If you say there is no difference in this, then, when a central atom is surrounded by six directional atoms, is the part with the ultimate atom located in the west the same as all the ultimate atoms located in the north? No. According to the first view, the six directional atoms are the nature of the ultimate atom located in the center, so all things composed of it will become ultimate atoms. According to the latter view, the vow of indivisibility is broken. Therefore, since a single ultimate atom is not established, many do not exist. Since there is no such thing, things like being without gaps and non-adhering are just mental fabrications. Some people think that things are branch-like, like rosaries and threads. That is not reasonable, because are branches and things with branches the same or different? The first is not reasonable, because if the initial part is red, etc., then all the central parts and the other initial part should also be red, etc., because they are the same. The latter is not reasonable, because no branch-containing thing other than the branches is found; who has seen a branch-containing thing other than double-stranded threads and individual hairs? To that, Mind-Only proponents say: Although there is no self or atoms, moments of mind and wisdom arise continuously. That is not reasonable, because moments are not established. Also, a past moment has ceased, and a future moment does not exist because it is not established. Since those two do not exist, where is the present moment of the arising of the result? Furthermore, does mind arise from causes and results that are different in time, or from things that are simultaneous? According to the first, does it arise from something separated by another time, or does it arise without separation? The first is not reasonable, because it can only arise from the past, since it is a nonexistent thing that has ceased. The latter is not reasonable, because all times will enter into one moment, and an eon will become just a moment, and a moment will become a part of time. According to the second, it is also not reasonable, because what help does the cause give to the result? Because the distinction between cause and effect is not observed in things that are simultaneous, like left and right. Furthermore, if mind arises from something existent, then a pot would also arise from a pot; if it arises from something nonexistent, then a horn on a mountain would arise.
