A Brief Compilation of the Paths of the Great and Small Vehicles. A Brief Compilation of the Paths of the Great and Small Vehicles. A Brief Compilation of the Paths of the Great and Small Vehicles. Homage to the Guru! Jamyang Sakya Pandita, in his "Clarification of the Intent of the Sage," stated: The foundation for teaching conduct is the Vinaya; the essence of teaching meditation and explanation is the Sutras and Abhidharma; the quintessence of teaching secret mantra must be in accordance with the Tantras. Of these, what is relevant now is to briefly explain the general Abhisamaya of the paths of the Great and Small Vehicles. The Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas enter as it is said: "Those who possess discipline, learning, and contemplation, should diligently engage in meditation." Pratyekabuddhas, on top of that, mainly practice the arising and ceasing of dependent origination. However, the Vaibhashikas do not emphasize great compassion, while the Sautrantikas do. The Pratyekabuddhas make the realization of non-apprehension the path, which is the difference. The Svatantrika Madhyamikas of the Great Vehicle, from the "Blazing Intellect," [say]: "Do not abandon the mind of enlightenment, and properly rely on the asceticism of the Sage. Seeking that very thing with knowledge is the conduct that accomplishes all purposes." Thus, there are three stages of conduct. The Prasangikas, as explained by Chandrakirti in the "Entering the Middle Way," are said to enter through the practice of the ten bhumis. The later Madhyamikas hold that the Buddha taught the Dharma relying entirely on the two truths, as Nagarjuna said. Thus, they condense it into the two truths, and the individuals who practice it also practice according to the order of sharp and dull faculties. As it is said: "In seeking that very thing, first, one should say that everything exists. Having realized the meanings and being without attachment, later, there is complete solitude." Acharya Aryadeva said: "First, avert non-merit." And so on, there are three stages. Acharya Hero said in the "Garland of Instructions": One enters through the four stages of the conduct of excellence, good rebirth, peace, and definitive emergence. The Mind-Only School, as explained in the "Compendium of Vehicles," has ten. Thus, the great traditions explained by the great charioteers are nine. Furthermore, Nagarjuna said in the "Precious Garland": "Whoever desires to attain unsurpassed enlightenment for themselves and others, the mind of enlightenment is the root of that, as stable as the king of mountains."

Compassion that reaches all directions, and wisdom that does not rely on duality. Thus, it is summarized by the three dharmas. Lord Maitreya, with the Ornament of Clear Realization, summarizes all the meanings of the Prajñāpāramitā into eight clear realizations, and all the meanings of the profound sutras into seven vajra statements, etc., which are boundless. Among them, Jetsun Sakya Paṇḍita follows the sutras that are extremely extensive in terms of practice and the profound Prajñāpāramitā Sutra in terms of view, and establishes it in accordance with the stages of the path in the Ornament of the Sutras, which is known as "Enlightened Intent of the Able One," or "Excellent Path of the Noble Sons," or "Great Dharma Assembly." Furthermore, in India, there is Jowo's Lamp for the Path of Awakening, Fearless Source's Ornament of the Intent of the Able One, and many others. In Tibet, there is Drolungpa's Stages of the Teachings, Phaba's Entrance to the Conduct of the Noble Sons, Dakpo's Ornament of Liberation, Phagdru's Stages of the Path, Tsongkhapa's Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path and Concise Treatise on the Stages of the Path, etc., which are extremely numerous. Among them, one first begins with generating the mind of enlightenment and gradually trains like the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, while another first trains in suchness and then begins with generating the mind of enlightenment, etc., like the Compendium of Vehicles. The former is intended for those with dull faculties, while the latter is for those with sharp faculties, as instructions for transforming all the paths that arise below into a condition conducive to liberation. Therefore, it is in accordance with the differences of individuals. In this text, first, there is the lineage of those who are endowed with the potential from the beginning, then one is constantly trained by the cause of compassion, takes refuge in the Three Jewels, and develops faith in the Dharma. Then, there is the basis for entering into practice—generating the mind of enlightenment—and the actual practice—the six perfections. These are the four grounds of practice with faith. Then, there is entering into the flawless conduct of a bodhisattva, which is called obtaining the first ground. Then, there is fully ripening sentient beings, which is the seventh ground. Then, there is purifying the fields and non-abiding nirvana, which are the three irreversible grounds. These are the path. Then, there is enlightenment, which is manifest enlightenment, and showing the great non-abiding nirvana, which is showing the meaning of sentient beings, which is the result. The first eight are called vehicles because one goes by them, and the last three are called vehicles because one goes in them, which are the ten dharmas. The tenth is here as seven.
