Again, experiencing sufferings such as rebirth, enduring intense, harsh, and unceasing torment. As it is said: The messengers of Yama flay the skin entirely, causing extreme exhaustion; molten copper, melted by intensely hot fire, is poured onto the body; burning swords and short spears strike, flesh and blood are destroyed into hundreds of pieces; falling onto the intensely burning iron ground, transformed by many non-virtues. Thus it is said. Some of these sufferings exist intermittently, while all the sufferings of the higher ones are fully contained in the lower ones, and all four hundred and four types of diseases are present, thus remaining in suffering. The surrounding hells are: Sixteen more than all eight, on the four sides of these, are pits of embers, mire of corpses, paths of razors, and rivers. Therefore, on each of the four sides of all eight great hells, there are four each of pits of embers and so on, thus there are sixteen. That is, in the great plain of the pit of embers, when one goes in up to the knees, as soon as the foot is placed, the skin and flesh and blood are burned, and as soon as it is lifted, it revives; in the mire of corpses, when the body sinks into the extremely foul mud of excrement, worms with sharp beaks pierce and eat from the skin to the soles of the feet; when walking on the path filled with razors pointing upwards, as soon as the foot is placed, it is cut off, and as soon as it is lifted, it revives; in the forest of sword leaves, when resting in the shade, the swords fall and all limbs are cut off; when exhausted and falling down, dogs and foxes swarm and tear flesh and eat; when arriving at the forest of iron shalmala trees, when climbing up and down with sharp thorns sixteen fingers long looking up and down, the body is pierced all over, and there crows with iron beaks come, land on the shoulders, and pluck out the eyeballs and eat; in the river called "Without Exhaustion," filled with boiling water of ashes or corrosives, the body falls in, and on both sides there are beings guarding with various weapons, all flesh and blood are exhausted, and the bones are boiled until they become like kunda flowers, and in between they are pulled out with iron hooks, placed face up, and asked what they want, but we know nothing and see nothing.

However, the so-called "hunger and thirst" refers to experiencing sufferings such as burning embers and molten metal being poured into the mouth. From these sufferings, adding the sword mountain, forests, and sword-leaf forest, there are a total of those four surrounding hells. In the eight cold hells, there is no appearance of light from the sun and moon, etc. In dark places, within huge frozen bubbles, one experiences extremely cold suffering that corresponds to the forms of body and sound, with each successive suffering being more intense. That is, because the great wind in that place blows and is threatened by the cold, the entire body becomes covered in blisters; colder than that, the blisters also burst; because it is extremely cold, the teeth chatter, making a faint "Achu" sound, and a dangerous "Aye" sound; the skin turns blue and splits into five or six sections, cracking like an উৎপལ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari: utpala, Romanized: utpala, Literal meaning: উৎপལ་); even more than blue, it turns red and splits into ten or more sections, cracking like a lotus; becoming extremely red, it splits into a hundred or a thousand or more, possessing endless suffering of cracking extremely like a lotus. The suffering of the neighboring life hells is that some executioners are pecked by birds of prey on ash heaps and mouths and noses, butcher's apprentices are pecked by crows and the like on stinking bone heaps, and some fishermen are born with their bodies wrapped in iron, etc., as explained in the sutras. Furthermore, there are stories such as those found in the Jataka tales of "Gedun Sung" and "Drowa Zhin Kye." In the 'Letter to a Friend,' it says: "Here, the suffering of being fiercely stabbed three hundred times a day with short spears does not equal even a small fraction of the suffering of hell, not even a small part, let alone the whole." Thus, the suffering of hell is immeasurable and extremely terrifying. For details, one should learn from the 'Saddharma-smṛtyupasthāna Sūtra' and others. The measure is:
