于是径直走向孔雀，例如：新绿鲜花，大地令人愉悦，亭台花园极其美丽，树木鲜花品种繁多，品质优良，宛如水泡串串，如象王从鼻中喷出。各种鸟儿唱着动听的歌，湖边装饰得美不胜收。慈爱的猎人身穿袈裟，去寻找美丽孔雀嬉戏的地方。去后远远地看见孔雀走来，非常高兴，便用毒药涂抹箭矢。随即射出，击中了孔雀。之后，与成千上万的孔雀一同飞向天空，降落在远方。孔雀眷属中，有一只名叫“光彩”的孔雀哭着说道：唉，在这五浊恶世，身着袈裟，行持佛法的人实在太少了。我们这些无辜者虽然行持佛法，但鸟王您却遭受残忍的死亡。孔雀王对眷属们说：这由四大组成的身体，无论如何也无益处，此生注定要死亡。如果拥有这个身体，就会成为产生痛苦的根源，因此，不要对身体产生执着。光彩说：这是一个诽谤智者，赞美虚伪老者的国度。身着僧衣者对他人极其凶狠。想到末法时代的行径，便泪流满面。这恶劣的时代，谁也没有真理。美丽嬉戏的孔雀说：我的生命从这里向上提升，绝不产生丝毫的恶念和罪恶之心。我的身体即使抛弃在这片土地上也可以，对于身着袈裟者，要极力避免伤害。对于所有出家人，无论何时都不能产生恶意。光彩说：拥有五彩虹光盘旋的发髻，涂着酥油光泽的嬉戏血统美丽，拥有方便智慧的美丽双翼如天空般湛蓝，拥有神变珊瑚般光芒的足，拥有弓箭般威力的轮状翎毛，金色的喙，圆润的头，明亮的眼睛极其美丽，善于言辞，拥有迦陵频伽的音声，拥有慈悲之心，是吉祥的鸟中之王。如果与您分离，我们这些孔雀，在鸟类中该如何行事？请您开示，具有智慧，明察事理的您。

Then he went straight to the peacock, for example: The new green flowers make the land delightful, the pavilions and gardens are extremely beautiful, the trees and flowers are diverse and of good quality, like strings of water bubbles, as the elephant king blows from its nose. Various birds sing beautiful songs, and the lake shore is adorned with beauty. The loving hunter, wearing a kasaya, went to find the place where the beautiful peacock was playing. After going, he saw the peacock coming from afar, and was very happy, so he smeared poison on the arrow. He shot it, and it hit the peacock. Then, together with hundreds of thousands of peacocks, they flew into the sky and landed far away. Among the peacock retinue, a peacock named "Splendor" cried and said: Alas, in this age of the five degenerations, there are very few who wear the yellow robe and practice the Dharma. Although we innocent ones practice the Dharma, you, the king of birds, suffer a cruel death. The peacock king said to his retinue: This body composed of the four elements is of no benefit whatsoever, and this life is destined to die. If you have this body, it will become the source of suffering, therefore, do not be attached to the body. Splendor said: This is a land that slanders the wise and praises the false old men. Those wearing monastic robes are extremely fierce to others. Thinking of the actions of the degenerate age, tears well up. In this evil age, no one has truth. The beautiful playful peacock said: My life will ascend upwards from here, and I will not generate even a moment of evil thoughts or sinful mind. Even if my body is abandoned in this land, I will avoid harming those who wear the kasaya. Towards all ordained people, I can never generate malice at any time. Splendor said: Possessing a topknot with swirling five-colored rainbow light, the playful lineage with the luster of ghee is beautiful, possessing beautiful wings of skillful means as blue as the sky, possessing feet with the light of miraculous coral, possessing tail feathers with the power of a bow and arrow, a golden beak, a round head, bright eyes are extremely beautiful, skilled in speech, possessing the voice of a Kalaviṅka, possessing a compassionate heart, is the glorious king of birds. If we are separated from you, we peacocks, how should we act among the birds? Please explain to me, you who are wise and discerning.

说：谛听，光彩美丽具喜乐之善心者，世间顺应之法即是如此。与他人和睦是人法的根本。罪恶的坏话如海螺般传扬时，以哑巴的姿态寂静独处。恶时节，不友善之人如云般涌动时，对不友善之人及眷属，要如虚空般稳固。对于如柱子般坚定信任之人，要如赛马般具有极大的羞耻之心。对于白色善妙解脱的阶梯，要毫不拖延地如鸟般飞翔。对于如黑暗般的分别念无明，要以如阳光般清净的花朵来照亮。如草尖露珠、风中之灯般，无常死亡何时到来无法知晓，舍弃拖延懒惰，生起精进。流转轮回中，将遭受永久的痛苦。值遇殊胜之法极为困难，如今在此人身圆满之时，要成就永久的利益啊，孩子。恶趣的悬崖、善趣的利益，以及喧嚣的过患、寂静的利益等，要反复思量，以鞭子策励自己。以清净的戒律、不损的誓言，对于殊胜的甘露大乘之法，听闻、思维、修行、实修交替修持，不久将成为佛法之王。于入定之时积聚智慧资粮，于出定之时积聚福德资粮，获得法身后自利圆满，获得色身后成办他利。智慧资粮洗净法身的垢染，福德资粮增上色身的圆满。以愿力之力量，成办他利之事业，将无勤任运成就一切。

Said: Listen, O radiant and joyful one with a pure heart, the way of worldly harmony is like this. Being in harmony with others is the root of human conduct. Even if evil words of wrongdoing spread like a conch shell, remain silent and secluded like a mute. In bad times, when unfriendly people stir like clouds, be as steadfast as the sky towards those who are unfriendly and your kin. To those who are trustworthy like pillars, have great shame and propriety like a horse race. On the white path of virtue, the staircase to liberation, fly like a bird without delay. To the darkness-like conceptual ignorance, illuminate with the sun-like pure flowers. Like dew on the tip of grass, a lamp in the wind, since impermanence and death may come at any time, abandon procrastination and laziness, and generate diligence. Wandering in samsara, you will suffer eternal torment. Meeting the sacred Dharma is extremely difficult, so now, at this time of perfect conditions, strive to accomplish the ultimate goal, my child. The precipice of the lower realms, the benefits of the higher realms, the faults of busyness, and the benefits of solitude, contemplate them again and again, and urge yourself on with a whip. With pure morality and unbroken vows, practice listening, contemplating, meditating, and accomplishing the supreme nectar of the Great Vehicle in alternation, and soon you will become the king of Dharma. During meditative equipoise, accumulate the collection of wisdom, and during post-meditation, accumulate the collection of merit. Having attained the Dharmakaya, you will have perfected your own benefit, and having attained the Rupakaya, you will accomplish the benefit of others. The collection of wisdom washes away the stains of the Dharmakaya, and the collection of merit increases the splendor of the Rupakaya. By the power of aspiration, the activity of benefiting others will spontaneously and effortlessly arise in abundance. After saying this, he passed away, and the earth shook in six ways. A great rain of flowers fell from the sky. Then the hunter carried the peacock's corpse and brought it to the king's palace, and told the king the story in detail. The king said: 'You, black one, accustomed to sinful deeds, have killed an innocent being wandering in the forest with a poisoned arrow and come to my presence. This peacock is not ordinary, it is enlightenment itself. Whoever makes offerings to its corpse, and whoever diligently prostrates and makes offerings, will attain the pure, unsurpassed enlightenment.'

说完，国王用各种供养来供养孔雀的尸体，将其放入珍宝佛塔中，并通过持续的礼拜和绕塔来获得暂时的吉祥。当他去世时，伴随着许多奇妙的征兆，他转生到了极乐世界。慈氏啊，如果你们认为那位孔雀国王是别人，不要那样看。我的声闻弟子中的佼佼者，年轻的离车毗，就是这位让世间一切众生都乐于见到的人。扎卡塔国王就是光明王。猎人就是外道胜者。孔雀的大臣就是现在的菩萨观世音。慈氏啊，就这样理解吧。这是孔雀王本生故事第十六品。

Having said this, the king offered various offerings to the peacock's corpse, placed it in a precious stupa, and through constant prostrations and circumambulations, he obtained temporary auspiciousness. When he died, accompanied by many wondrous signs, he was reborn in Sukhavati. Maitreya, if you think that peacock king is someone else, do not view it that way. The foremost of my Shravaka disciples, the young Licchavi, is none other than this one whom all beings in the world delight to see. King Jakata was King Radiance. The hunter was the Tirthika Conqueror. The peacock's minister is now the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. Maitreya, understand it thus. This is the sixteenth chapter, the Jataka of the Great Peacock.
