Eleventh, the story of the birth of the horse king Balaha. Eleventh, the story of the birth of the horse king Balaha. Once again, the horse king Balaha emanated to benefit beings, from the Vajra Tent of the Dakini. With the intention of saving the Buddha and sentient beings, he performed the dance of the Buddha, teaching with compassion in the snow mountains, lions, and various beings such as horses and cattle. So it is said. In the Sutra Requested by the Lord of the Earth, a small bird was chased by a hawk, and the Bodhisattva Licchavi liberated it by showing the mudra of fearlessness. Afterwards, Manjushri Kumara asked the Bhagavan: O Bhagavan, it is wonderful that Licchavi saved the little bird. The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, this Licchavi who is pleasing to see, in the past was the horse king Balaha, and at that time I also obtained liberation from the island of Simhala (Sri Lanka). So it is said. In the Holy Sutra of the Ornament of the Basket, it says: Son of good family, in the past, when I became a Bodhisattva, I traveled with five hundred merchants, riding in vehicles, pack animals, carrying goods, riding on mares, cows, donkeys, and so on, and entered the ocean. Either we encountered a storm on the island of jewels, or we encountered a storm on the island of monkeys, or we encountered a storm on the island of Rakshasas. The merchants carrying heavy loads and the large ship were broken, and the merchants approached the shore of a water source. Then, five hundred Rakshasa women transformed into the forms of young girls, making noisy sounds, and came to the water's edge, begging with splendid cloths, and they tore my clothes. We rested under a Champaka tree, and I asked what could be done, and they said there was no way, so we remained silent. Then, the Rakshasa women said: If you have no husband, find a husband; if you have no dwelling, find a dwelling; if you have no support, find a support. These are your houses of food, houses of drink, and gardens. So it is said. The Rakshasa women each took a man home. I was taken home by a very old man, possessing the finest celestial delicacies.

He satisfied her with that (referring to the food mentioned earlier). Then he began to make love to her. Thus, two, three, to seven days passed. One night, as he lay sleeping and was overcome by sleep, she laughed and was amazed. I asked her why she laughed. She said, "This is a Rākṣasī who lives in Siṃhala, and she will take your life." I asked her, "How do you know that these are Rākṣasīs?" She said, "Go along this road, and you will see an iron house without windows or stables. There, a hundred merchants are lost, some alive and some dead. If you go there, you will believe it." Having said this, the fool was then overcome by sleep. Then the Bodhisattva went out at night, taking the sword that shone like the moon, which was his means of livelihood. He went to the iron city and searched all around, but could not find a gate. Then he climbed a Champaka tree that was there. I made a coughing sound, and the merchants heard it and said, "Great merchant lord, please be aware." They spoke as before. Then I came down from the Champaka tree, went quickly, and went back to listen. They said, "Captain, do you see?" I said, "I see." Then I asked, "What is the way?" He said, "There is a divine way by which one can obtain happiness and be without suffering, and having come from the island of Siṃhala, one can see Jambudvīpa again." I asked him to show me the way, and he said pleasantly, "There is a horse king named Bhala-ha, who is compassionate towards lowly and impoverished beings, and he rolls back and forth on a golden sandy beach. He shakes his body and says, 'Who wants to go to the other shore?' You tell him, 'Lord, I want to go to the other shore.' Then you sleep with the Rākṣasī. After the sun rises, you get up and say to the merchants, 'Come here, all of you! It is safe to go outside the city.'" Then they all gathered there and rested. I asked them, "How did you do it?" Some said, "The body is very comfortable." Some said, "Enjoying the best divine flavors." Some said, "Holding the diadem and earrings."
